Tours to Montenegro: what to know

Tours to Montenegro from Shymkent are a connecting flight via Istanbul or Dubai and a holiday on the Adriatic from mid-September to late October, when the sea at Budva and Becici is still warm and prices drop by almost half. In summer it is more expensive and crowded, and bookings for July are snapped up in winter. The journey takes from eight to twelve hours, the nearest airport is Tivat.

When to go to the coast

The weather on the Adriatic divides the year into two different seasons, and both the price and the busyness of the beaches depend on the choice of month. Let us break down when it is hottest here, and when it is calmer and cheaper.

Velvet season on the Adriatic coast

Mild weather lasts in Montenegro from mid-September to late October. The sea at Budva and Becici cools slowly and remains comfortable for swimming almost until November. During the day the air warms up to twenty-two to twenty-five degrees, the heat subsides, and the beaches empty out. It is precisely in these weeks that a holiday in Montenegro turns out calm and inexpensive. Hotels in the Bay of Kotor lower prices by almost half compared to August. The water around Petrovac and Sveti Stefan in early October still stays above twenty degrees. Take a light windbreaker with you: in the evenings it is fresh by the sea. For tours to Montenegro from Shymkent, the velvet season is also convenient because bookings are made without haste.

Holidays and high demand for accommodation

The peak of demand falls on July and the first half of August. In these weeks, rooms in Budva, Becici and Petrovac are snapped up several months before check-in. Prices for accommodation in Montenegro in high season rise noticeably above spring levels. Local holidays and Catholic Easter should be considered separately. On such dates, residents of neighbouring countries flock to the coast, and almost no free apartments remain. It is worth booking in advance both for the May holidays and for the first days of September. If the trip is planned for late July, look for accommodation in Bar or Ulcinj already in winter. The calmest time for booking is in June and in the twenties of September.

Preparations before departure

Preparation for a trip to the coast should be started in advance. Let us break down which papers to keep at the ready and what to pay attention to before departure.

Passport validity and entry rules

A valid passport is the main document for any trip abroad. Check its validity in advance: if less than six months remain until expiry, it is better to replace the document. This is a general rule that applies in almost all countries. Take printed copies of your hotel booking and return tickets with you. Keep copies of documents separately from the originals. Such a set will be useful both at check-in and for any questions at the border. For tours to Montenegro from Shymkent, documents are prepared in advance, not on the day of departure.

Medical insurance and tourist tax

A medical insurance policy is arranged before departure, not upon arrival. For a holiday in Montenegro, it covers treatment, injuries and emergency assistance. Choose a programme with coverage from thirty thousand euros: this is enough for most cases. Separately check whether the policy includes active recreation and trips in a rented car. The tourist tax on the coast is paid at check-in at a hotel or apartments. Usually it is taken in cash for each day of stay. In Budva, Kotor and Tivat the amount is stated at the reception. Keep the receipts for payment of the tax until the end of the trip.

The journey and choosing accommodation

The journey to the Adriatic consists of a flight and a short transfer. Then we choose exactly where to spend the holiday and in what format to live.

Connecting flight and airport transfer

There are no direct flights from Kazakhstan to the coast, so you will have to fly with a connection. The most convenient connection is via Istanbul or Dubai. The total travel time including waiting takes from eight to twelve hours. The nearest airport to the resorts is Tivat, which receives most of the flights. From Tivat to Budva and Becici it is about half an hour's drive, to Kotor — approximately the same. To Herceg Novi and Bar the journey takes a little over an hour. To Petrovac and Sveti Stefan you get there in forty minutes. The transfer is ordered in advance or you take a taxi at the exit from the terminal. The time difference with Shymkent is small, there will be no severe acclimatisation.

Hotels, apartments and villas: what to choose

The format of accommodation in Montenegro is chosen to suit the company and the budget. Below is a comparison of the main accommodation options on the coast.

Type of accommodationWho it suitsWhat to consider
HotelCouples and families with childrenMeals and cleaning included
ApartmentsCompanies and large familiesThere is a kitchen and a washing machine
VillaGroups of six or moreOften need your own car
Guest houseBudget touristsOwners nearby, breakfast by arrangement

Hotels in Budva and Becici are convenient for their proximity to the beach and developed infrastructure. Apartments in Bar are chosen by those who want to cook themselves and save on meals. Villas in the Ulcinj area are taken by large companies for two weeks. Guest houses in Kotor are cheaper, but require clarifying the accommodation conditions in advance. For a holiday in Montenegro with children, hotels with a pool and meals are more often chosen. Accommodation on a slope means stairs, which is worth asking about before booking.

How much does the trip cost?

Expenses on the coast consist of accommodation, food, excursions and small purchases. Let us break down where you can save without losing impressions.

Euro exchange rate, money exchange and card payment

The national currency of Montenegro is the euro, so all payments are made in it. The exchange rate to the tenge changes, and before the trip it is worth checking separately. It is more profitable to exchange money in banks and exchange offices in Budva and Kotor, and not at Tivat airport. At the airport the rate is noticeably worse, so take a minimal amount for the first hours. Cards from Kazakh banks are not accepted everywhere: in large hotels and supermarkets payment goes through, in small cafes and at markets it does not. Keep cash on you for food, taxis and market purchases. ATMs in Bar and Herceg Novi are common, check the commission on the screen.

Prices for food, excursions and beach equipment

Food in Montenegro costs moderately if you do not have lunch in tourist places right by the water. Lunch in a cafe away from the promenade costs noticeably less. Products at the markets of Petrovac and Ulcinj are fresh and inexpensive. Excursions are sold on the promenades and in hotels, prices vary depending on the route. Beach equipment — a sunbed and an umbrella — at paid sections of Budva and Becici is charged separately. On wild beaches sunbeds are not provided, but you also do not have to pay. It is cheaper to bring a mask and a swimming umbrella with you. A full-day excursion is worth booking in advance: in high season groups fill up quickly.

What to do besides the beach?

The coast quickly gets boring for those who lie on the beach from morning to evening. We will tell you where to go and what to see in the surroundings.

Excursions inland and to neighboring states

From Budva and Kotor it is convenient to go to the mountains and lakes for one day. The road to Lake Skadar takes about an hour, there you can ride boats among lotuses. The Tara River Canyon and Durmitor mountains are chosen by those who want coolness in summer. From Herceg Novi and Tivat there are one-day trips to Dubrovnik. From Bar it is convenient to get to Albania and its coastal towns. Excursions around Montenegro usually start early in the morning and last all day. Take water, a hat and comfortable shoes: the climbs in the mountains are steep. Some routes go along serpentine roads, and those who get carsick should prepare in advance.

Shopping, markets and local cuisine

Montenegrin cuisine is built on fish, meat and vegetables grown nearby. Try prosciutto, cheese from Njegusi, fresh grilled fish and local wine. The portions are large, so order one dish and share. Markets in Kotor and Bar work in the morning and close by lunch. There people buy olive oil, honey, dried figs and homemade cheese. Among souvenirs they bring wine, rakia and handmade ceramics. Shops in Budva and Tivat are open late, but prices there are higher than at the market. Bargaining at the market is appropriate, in shops it is not. It is more convenient to go shopping on foot: parking near the markets is almost always occupied.
