Tours to Vietnam: what to know
Tours to Vietnam from Astana are a flight with one connection and a holiday on the coast of the South China Sea. The best time to travel is from February to April, when Nha Trang and Phu Quoc are dry and warm. A standard tour lasts 7–14 nights.
Visa, insurance and documents for the trip: what is needed?
Before traveling to Vietnam, it is worth sorting out the formalities in advance. Such tours from Astana usually include the flight and accommodation, but everyone arranges the paperwork themselves.
Visa-free regime and what is asked at the border
Citizens of Kazakhstan enter Vietnam without a visa for up to 30 days. At passport control in Cam Ranh or Hanoi, a tourist may be asked for a return ticket and confirmation of a hotel booking. Print these documents in advance so you do not have to look for internet at the airport. The border officer sometimes asks a question about the purpose of the trip, and a short answer of "holiday" is enough. If you plan to stay longer than a month, arrange an extension on the spot through local agencies. For a standard holiday in Vietnam, this is not required.
Medical insurance and vaccinations before departure
A medical policy with coverage from 10,000 USD for Vietnam is not formally mandatory, but in case of hospitalization the bill is paid on the spot. Take out insurance before departure from Astana, otherwise treatment at a clinic in Nha Trang or Da Nang will cost a hefty sum. Vaccinations against hepatitis A and typhoid fever are recommended for those going to rural areas and the Mekong Delta. Malaria vaccination is only done before trips to mountainous regions. In the tourist areas of Phu Quoc and Mui Ne, the risk of infection is minimal. Take a first-aid kit with your usual medicines: Vietnamese equivalents may not suit you.
Money, communications and transport on the spot: how to figure it out?
Financial matters and communications are sorted out on the spot in a couple of days. It is better to check the exchange rate and tariffs immediately upon arrival.
Cash, cards and currency exchange
Money in Vietnam is dong, and the rate to the tenge is unstable. It is more profitable to exchange in jewelry stores and banks in Hanoi or Ho Chi Minh City, and not at Cam Ranh airport. Visa and Mastercard cards are accepted in hotels and large restaurants, but cash is needed in markets and taxis. ATMs issue a limited amount at a time, plus a commission from the Vietnamese bank and the Kazakh one. Withdraw large sums so as not to pay twice. Tipping is not mandatory, but in the tourist areas of Nha Trang and Phu Quoc it is customary to leave 5–10% in restaurants and 20–50 thousand dong for hotel staff.
SIM card, internet and movement around the country
A local Viettel or Mobifone SIM card with a tourist tariff for 30 days will cost less than roaming with Kazakh operators. You can buy it at the airport or a mobile phone shop in Da Nang. The internet catches almost everywhere, except remote mountainous regions. Domestic flights with VietJet and Bamboo are inexpensive, trains and sleeper buses connect Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City and Da Nang. Renting a motorbike is popular in Mui Ne and Phan Thiet, but you need a category A license and a helmet. Without a license you get fined. Driving yourself in Ho Chi Minh City is risky: the traffic is chaotic, and a car with a driver is safer.
| City | Main transport | Feature |
|---|---|---|
| Nha Trang | Taxi, motorbike | Many tourists, prices are higher |
| Phu Quoc | Motorbike, shuttle | Roads are being built, some places are dirt |
| Hanoi | Taxi, Grab | Dense traffic in the center |
| Mui Ne | Motorbike, bus | Resort area, convenient on foot |
Accommodation and food: how to choose and not overpay
Accommodation and food are the two main expense items on holiday. The choice depends on the resort and the season.
Guesthouses, hotels and high season
Guesthouses and mini-hotels in Vietnam cost from 15–20 USD per night. 4–5 stars hotels with breakfast will cost from 50 USD. In high season, prices in Phu Quoc and Da Nang rise 1.5–2 times. Book in advance if you are going to Phan Thiet or Hoi An for the New Year holidays. In Nha Trang the choice of accommodation is wider, and it is easier to find an option within budget. Guesthouses in Mui Ne often offer a motorbike for rent, which is convenient for trips to the market and the beach.
| Type of accommodation | Price per night | Features |
|---|---|---|
| Guesthouses and mini-hotels | from 15–20 USD | Motorbike for rent in Mui Ne |
| 4–5 stars hotels | from 50 USD | With breakfast |
| Phu Quoc and Da Nang in high season | rise 1.5–2 times | Book in advance |
| Phan Thiet and Hoi An | book in advance | New Year holidays |
| Nha Trang | wider choice of accommodation | Easier to find within budget |
Street food, restaurants and drinking water
Vietnamese street food is pho, banh mi and fresh seafood. In tourist areas there are Russian and European restaurants, but it is cheaper to eat in local establishments. A portion of pho in Hanoi costs pennies compared to a restaurant in a hotel. Drink only bottled water. It is better to ask about ice in street cafes: it is often made from purified water, but not everywhere. Dinner at the market in Nha Trang will cost less than in a hotel restaurant, and the choice of seafood is wider.
Safety, customs and useful habits
A calm holiday in Vietnam depends on simple habits. Local customs should be respected, and safety should be thought about in advance.
Petty theft, documents and road traffic
In the tourist areas of Ho Chi Minh City and Nha Trang, petty theft occurs. Keep documents and money in the hotel safe, and take only the needed amount with you. It is not worth holding your phone in your hand at the edge of the roadway: it can be snatched from a motorbike. Road traffic in Vietnam is chaotic, and renting a car with a driver is safer than driving yourself. Cross the road slowly and predictably, do not run. In Da Nang and Hoi An the traffic is calmer than in Hanoi.
Clothing for temples and rules of behavior
To enter the pagodas and temples of Vietnam, covered shoulders and knees are required. Shoes are taken off at the entrance, so comfortable sandals will come in handy. In Hoi An and Hanoi there are many active temples, and shorts are inappropriate there. Photographing monks without permission is not worth it. Loud conversations in sacred places are perceived as disrespect. On the beaches of Phu Quoc and Nha Trang the dress code is free, but outside the resort area it is better to look modest.

What to buy as a gift and how to bargain
Souvenirs from Vietnam are a separate part of the holiday. The range is wide, and prices at markets are flexible.
Coffee, tea, spices and silk
Vietnamese coffee with condensed milk is the most popular souvenir. Robusta beans are sold at the markets of Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City, the price depends on weight. Tea and spices are brought from mountain regions, and silk — from Hoi An. Bargaining at the market is customary: the starting price is often doubled. Start with half the amount and do not rush to agree. Quality silk feels dense and cool to the touch, a cheap imitation quickly loses its appearance.
Pearls and ceramics: what to look for
Pearls from Phu Quoc are sold in jewelry shops and at markets. Natural pearls have an uneven surface and beads of different shades, perfectly smooth and cheap ones are usually imitation. Ceramics are brought from a village near Hanoi: look at the glaze and the absence of cracks. In Da Nang and Hoi An the selection of ceramics is wider than in Nha Trang. Pack large purchases in hand luggage so they do not break in the baggage.
In short
- Plan your trip from February to April: the dry season in the south and mild weather in the center.
- Nha Trang is cheaper than Phu Quoc, but on the island the water is cleaner and there is less city noise.
- A tour for 10–14 nights covers two resorts: for example, Nha Trang and Mui Ne.
- Check with the operator whether the transfer from Cam Ranh to the hotel is included.
