Tours to Maldives: what to know

Maldives tours from Kostanay are a flight through Almaty with one or two connections in Dubai, Doha or Istanbul, a stay in a resort or guesthouse and a transfer to the atoll by seaplane or speedboat. The best season is the dry months from November to April, when the sea is calm and underwater visibility is at its maximum. The trip usually lasts from seven to fourteen nights.

Flight and trip logistics

The route to the atolls is built through Almaty, and such tours from Kostanay most often start from there. Let's look at connections and an overnight stay in the capital.

Connection routes through Almaty and foreign hubs

Domestic flights operate from Kostanay to Almaty, and the international leg begins from there. There are no direct flights to the Maldives from Kazakhstan, so tours are built through Dubai, Doha or Istanbul. An evening departure from Kostanay leaves little time for the connection, and a same-day connection is risky. If the flight is delayed, the holiday will have to be rearranged already at the airport. Buy tickets as a single booking — that way the connection will be rebooked without extra charges.

Overnight stay in Male on an evening arrival

Seaplanes in the Maldives fly only during daylight hours. Hotels in the capital are booked for one night, in the morning a seaplane or speedboat picks you up. Hulhumale is closer to the airport and cheaper, Male offers more choice of cafes and markets. The overnight stay is not always included in tours, check this point in advance. A holiday in the Maldives in this case begins a day later, but without haste and unnecessary stress.

Visa, money and entry rules

The financial side of the trip is simpler than it seems. Let's look at currency, cards and cash on the atolls.

Passport, visa on arrival and booking confirmation

To enter, citizens of Kazakhstan need a passport valid for at least six months. The visa on arrival is issued free of charge for thirty days if there is a return ticket and booking confirmation. Check the validity of the document before buying the tour: if it expires in five months, the trip will be postponed. Print out the hotel booking and return tickets — they are asked for at the desk. A holiday in the Maldives begins immediately after passport control, queues in Male are usually short. Check the details and current requirements on the official website of the Maldives immigration service.

Rufiyaa, dollars and ATMs on the atolls

The official currency of the Maldives is the rufiyaa, but in resorts and tourist places payment is in US dollars. Rufiyaa will be useful on local islands and in the markets of Male, where prices are noticeably lower. ATMs are available in the capital and on some inhabited islands, but on remote atolls cash dollars are more reliable than a card. Take a supply in small notes: large ones are exchanged reluctantly in guesthouses. It is convenient to pay for the trip here in advance, and keep cash on site for tips and souvenirs. The rate at the airport is unfavourable, exchange rufiyaa in the city.

How is a holiday on the atolls arranged?

The type of accommodation determines the whole holiday. Let's compare the two main accommodation options.

Resorts occupying a whole island and guesthouses

A resort occupies the island entirely, and tours here include transfer, meals and entertainment. Guesthouses on local islands are several times cheaper, but you live among Maldivians and observe local customs. The Maldives is an Islamic country, and on inhabited islands alcohol is not sold outside resorts. Beachwear is appropriate only on the beach, in the village it is covered up. But guesthouses offer genuine Maldivian cuisine and interaction with locals. A holiday in the Maldives at a resort is more private, in a guesthouse it is cheaper and more colourful.

BB and AI meal plans: which is more worthwhile

The BB plan is bed and breakfast, the AI plan is all inclusive with drinks and snacks. In resorts, food and drinks outside the package cost noticeably more than in the city. If you plan to spend a lot of time on the beach and not go out, AI pays off already on the second day. BB suits those who have dinner on local islands or go on excursions. Such tours are more often sold with AI, but the choice is always yours. Calculate the approximate daily expense: three meals plus drinks at the resort usually outweigh the price difference. A holiday in the Maldives with BB is cheaper, but requires planning.

What to do on the Maldives islands?

Underwater here is more interesting than on shore. Let's look at diving, snorkelling and local cuisine.

Snorkelling and diving: Ari Atoll and Baa Atoll

The best visibility and encounters with manta rays and whale sharks await at Baa Atoll and Ari Atoll. Snorkelling with a mask is available on almost any atoll, but the reefs at these two are noticeably richer. The manta season at Baa Atoll falls in different months, check with the instructor on site. Dive centres are available in every resort, and local schools operate on guest islands. Maldivian water is warm all year round, a wetsuit is needed only for deep dives. Ari Atoll is known for channels with currents, experienced divers dive there. Beginners are better off snorkelling at the house reef.

Maldivian cuisine and dinners on local islands

Maldivian cuisine is built on fish, coconut, rice and spicy curries. Tuna here is prepared in dozens of ways, from dried to a fresh steak. On the local islands, dinner at a cafe will cost several times less than at a resort. Try masuni — a mixture of tuna, coconut and spices, and the local roshi flatbreads. Resorts usually offer European, Asian and vegetarian dishes. A holiday in the Maldives without dinner on an inhabited island loses half its flavor. Order the fish of the day: it is caught in the morning and served in the evening.

What to consider before departure?

The preparations decide how the first week will go. Let's go over insurance, a first aid kit and sun protection.

Insurance, first aid kit and items prohibited for import

Medical insurance with coverage for activities is recommended: diving and snorkeling are injury-prone. The nearest major clinics are in Male and on several atolls, and evacuation is expensive. Put painkillers, diarrhea remedies, bandages and an antiseptic in your first aid kit. The Maldives prohibits the import of alcohol, pork and materials that offend Islam. Carry prescription medicines together with a supporting document from a doctor. Trips here do not cancel these rules, check the list in advance.

Tipping, dress code and sun protection

Tipping is not mandatory, but is welcomed: a dollar or two per service, about ten percent in restaurants on the local islands. In resorts the dress code is casual, in villages shoulders and knees are covered. Sunscreen with high SPF, a head covering and a rash guard are essential: the equatorial sun burns even in cloudy weather. A holiday in the Maldives without protection turns into sunburn on the very first day. Take enough cream for the entire trip, it is expensive on the atolls. Maldivian heat is easier to handle in light, loose clothing.
