Tours to China: what to know

The trip is planned based on the season: the south is better in winter, the north — in spring and autumn.

Holidays in China for guests from Kostanay

The trip begins with something simple: the country is open, and the route is built around cities and resorts. Let's break down what happens in the first 24 hours.

The first 24 hours and everyday tasks

The time difference with Almaty is 3 hours all year round: China is on UTC+8, Kazakhstan on UTC+5. It is better not to plan the first day densely. Yuan will come in handy right away — taxis, street food and small purchases are often paid only in cash. Visa and Mastercard are accepted to a limited extent, so a reserve for the first two days is mandatory. A SIM card from a local operator provides internet, without which phone-based cards do not work. Chinese food on the first evening is better to choose mild rather than spicy. An early bedtime helps you get into the rhythm.

What open entry gives and how the border works

Holidays in China for a Kazakhstani begin without document hassle: entry is allowed for up to 30 days with an ordinary passport. The passport must be valid for at least six months from the date of entry — this is the first thing checked at the counter. The border is crossed calmly if the answer about the purpose of the trip and the address of the first hotel are prepared in advance. The border officer may ask where the tourist is heading, so the hotel booking is kept at hand in printed form. Then the traveler enters the arrivals hall, passes sanitary control and collects the luggage. Temporary stay registration is arranged by the hotel within 24 hours after arrival; the guest does not need to worry about this. If the tourist stays with a hosting party, the issue is resolved by the owner of the accommodation — this is their responsibility, not the visitor's.

Which destinations do Kazakhstanis choose?

Destinations in China are divided into two large groups: megacities with history and southern beaches. The choice depends on what the tourist wants — impressions or warmth.

Beijing and Shanghai: cities and their surroundings

Beijing and Shanghai are two different faces of the country, and they should be separated into different trips. Beijing holds history: the Forbidden City, the Great Wall, the Temple of Heaven, hutong alleys with teahouses. Shanghai shows modernity: the Bund, Pudong district, Yu Garden and colonial quarters. It is convenient to move between the cities by high-speed train — the journey takes about five hours. In Beijing, the metro covers all the main attractions; fares are paid by card or phone. In Shanghai it is the same: the city subway helps out during rush hours. Beijing's surroundings are sections of the Great Wall and imperial tombs. Shanghai's surroundings are water towns and the gardens of Suzhou. At least three days are allocated for each city.

Sanya and Hainan Island: beaches and climate

Sanya on Hainan Island is the main beach answer to the question of where it is warm in winter. The resort stands in the south of the island, where even in January the air warms to comfortable levels, and the water remains suitable for swimming. Sanya's beaches are divided into three bays: Yalong Bay with expensive hotels, Dadonghai with a lively promenade and Sanya Bay with a long coastline. Hainan attracts not only with the sea: nearby are tropical parks, a Buddhist center and hot springs. Food on the island is milder than in the north, with plenty of fruit and seafood. Holidays in China here are unhurried, without city bustle. The rainy season in Hainan lasts from May to September, and typhoons are possible in August and September. The best time for beaches is from November to April.

When is the best time to plan a trip?

The season in China depends greatly on latitude: the south and north live by different weather calendars. A trip should be planned based on the region, not on the month in isolation from the map.

Rainy and typhoon seasons in the south

The rainy season in southern China falls in May–September, and this is the main factor when choosing a date. In Sanya and Hainan, rains come as short downpours, but humidity is high, and the sea may be rough. Typhoons on the coast are likely in August and September — during these months flights are sometimes rescheduled. The south in the off-season is cheaper, but the weather is unpredictable, and beach holidays may be disrupted. If the goal is a calm sea, it is better to look at November–April. For excursions around southern cities, October and March are suitable. When planning a trip, it is worth leaving one free day in case of a flight change. This rule is especially useful for Hainan in late summer.

Winter temperatures in the north and what to wear

In winter in the northern regions, the temperature drops below −15 °C, and without warm clothing it is uncomfortable to walk around Beijing. You need a down jacket, hat, gloves, warm boots and thermal underwear — the wind in the capital feels stronger than the thermometer shows. Indoors are heated well, so clothing should be easy to take off: in a museum or cafe it will be hot. The contrast between the street and indoors is the main difficulty of a winter trip. For Shanghai, winter is milder, but dampness does its work, and a warm layer is still needed. Spring and autumn in northern cities are the most convenient time for walks and excursions. In summer, the north is hot and crowded due to domestic tourism. Tours to China from Kostanay in winter are more often taken for the south, not the north.

How to get around and pay within the country

Internal logistics in China are well-established, but require apps and a reserve of cash. Let's break down transport and money — the two things that most often leave a guest stumped.

High-speed trains, domestic flights and the metro

High-speed trains connect major cities, and tickets are conveniently purchased through the Trip.com app. The train beats the plane over medium distances: there is no long journey to the airport and no check-in. Domestic flights between cities in China are cheaper than trains over long distances when booked early. For Hainan, a flight is often the only fast option. In Beijing and Shanghai, the metro covers all the main attractions, and fares are paid with a card or phone. The metro has baggage screening, so extra minutes are allowed for at the entrance. Taxis in cities are inexpensive, but drivers rarely speak English, and it is better to show the address on a screen. Train tickets are tied to a passport, so the document is always with you.

Cash yuan, cards and mobile payments

The currency in the country is the yuan, and exchange is possible at banks, hotels and airport exchange offices. International Visa and Mastercard cards are accepted to a limited extent, so cash yuan is necessary for everyday expenses. WeChat Pay and Alipay can be linked to a Kazakhstan card through international services, and then payment goes through a QR code. This is convenient in cafes, shops and on transport, where cash is accepted reluctantly. The rate at a hotel is usually less favorable than at a bank, but it is faster. Large banknotes in small shops may not be accepted, so it is useful to keep small change. Some of the cash should be kept separately from the main amount. Before the trip, check that the card is enabled for transactions abroad.

What to consider before departure from Kostanay

Preparation for a trip to China begins long before the suitcase. A few everyday details save nerves on the spot.

Language, food and drinking water

English is understood in hotels and tourist places; outside them, a translator on a smartphone comes in handy. Chinese cuisine varies greatly by region: Sichuan is spicy, Cantonese is mild, northern is hearty. In Beijing, try duck, in Shanghai, steamed dumplings, in Hainan, seafood. Street food is safe in crowded places, but tap water must not be drunk — only bottled. Ice in drinks outside hotels is also better avoided. Spicy dishes are washed down with tea, not cold water. If the stomach is sensitive, choose simple dishes for the first days. A holiday in China does not require a stock of food from home, but familiar snacks will not hurt.

Tipping, permits and communications on the spot

Tipping in China is not customary in restaurants and taxis, but is welcomed in expensive hotels. Visiting Tibet and some border areas requires a separate permit, which is arranged in advance. Communications on the spot are handled by a local SIM card or roaming from a Kazakhstan operator. Internet in hotels is almost everywhere, but some familiar apps may not open without additional settings. A VPN is better installed before departure, because it is harder to do on the spot. A phone charger is needed of your own, and sockets in the country fit most adapters. Money for small expenses is kept at hand, not in the suitcase.

Visa and entry rules change: check with the primary source — the Embassy of the People's Republic of China in the Republic of Kazakhstan, https://kz.china-embassy.gov.cn/lsfw/zhengjian/qianzheng/. The information on this page was checked on 18.09.2026.

In brief

  • The trip is planned around the season: the south is taken from November to April, the north in spring and autumn.
  • At least three days are allowed for each city, and between Beijing and Shanghai travel is by train.
  • Cash yuan is essential, cards are accepted to a limited extent, mobile payments require linking.
  • Tap water must not be drunk, English is understood only in tourist places.
