About the programme

This trip is about the contrast between a glass-and-neon metropolis and a world where mountains stand like columns and the water in the lakes does not move. Eight days, seven nights, three points on the map of China: Shanghai, Zhangjiajie and Fenghuang. The rhythm is uneven — first the road and a long flight, then two days in a row among cliffs and caves, then a transfer to the old town, mountains again and, finally, measured Shanghai with a large reserve of doing nothing. The international flight is not included in the price, and inside China the route is arranged as follows: a plane from Shanghai to Zhangjiajie, then travel by land, then a return flight to Shanghai.

The first two days are adaptation: arrival, a transfer to a domestic flight, an evening at the hotel without a guide, and only the next morning does the real thing begin. Zhangjiajie is verticality: a cable car ascent, cliffs that have become the backdrop for a big movie, a descent into the gorge. Here you want to look up and down at the same time.

The third day changes the optics: instead of height — water and stone. A calm lake, a huge cave with stone growths and a walk along a glass bridge over a chasm. Then the route leads to Fenghuang — a town on a river, where houses stand on stilts and boats go along old bridges. This is already a different China: not ceremonial, but residential and a little slowed down.

The fifth day is a return to the mountains, this time to the natural arch Heaven's Gate, which is wrapped in fog. Then Shanghai again: a garden with pavilions and a TV tower, and after that — a free day, which can be spent any way you like: walking along the embankment and shopping streets or, for an additional fee, going on a river cruise or on a one-day trip to the suburbs. The last morning is only a transfer and a flight home.

Who it suits: those who are ready for transfers and want to see both skyscrapers and natural forms for which people come here from all over the world. Those who do not mind walking and climbing to a height, but at the same time value days without a schedule.

Day-by-day itinerary

  1. Day 1

The road takes the whole day: first arrival in Shanghai, where you need to collect your luggage and check it in yourself for the next flight, then a flight to Zhangjiajie. No one meets you at the hotel — the transfer is without a guide, check-in is on your own. This is a day to get there and sleep, not to sightsee.

  2. Day 2

The first real day in the mountains. After breakfast the guide is waiting at the reception, and the ascent by cable car to Tianzi Mountain begins: the cliffs here stand so densely that the landscape seems painted. The descent is by the Hundred Dragons Elevator, from inside the mountain, with a view of the gorge. This is the most intense and the most "vertical" day of the trip; it ends with dinner and return to the hotel.

  3. Day 3

The rhythm changes: instead of height — water and stone. A boat ride on Baofeng Lake gives a breather and silence, and the Yellow Dragon Cave impresses with its scale and stone forms. A separate impression is a walking walk along a glass bridge over an abyss: the feeling that you are walking on air. The day ends with dinner at the hotel.

  4. Day 4

A day of transfer and change of scenery. After breakfast — four hours on the road to Fenghuang. There you will have a walk around the town and a boat ride on the Tuojiang River: from the water you can see old bridges and houses standing right at the edge. Then — check-in at a hotel in Fenghuang and rest.

  5. Day 5

The road again: return to Zhangjiajie and an excursion to Tianmen Mountain, Heaven's Gate Mountain. The main thing here is a huge natural arch at a height of about 1300 meters, which is often covered by fog, and this is a spectacle in itself. After dinner — transfer to the airport and flight to Shanghai, meeting without a guide, transfer to the hotel and check-in.

  6. Day 6

Shanghai begins with greenery and stone: the Garden of Joy with pavilions, bridges and thoughtful lines, lunch at a Chinese cuisine restaurant. Then — the Oriental Pearl TV Tower with a height of 468 meters: from the observation deck you can see the city and the river, and inside there are pavilions, restaurants and a museum. This day is packed tightly, but without haste; after the excursion — transfer to the hotel and free time.

  7. Day 7

A free day without a guide and a schedule. You can walk along the shopping streets and the Bund embankment, and for an additional fee — book an evening cruise with dinner on the Huangpu River. The second option for an additional fee is a one-day excursion with lunch to Zhujiajiao or to Suzhou, which is called one of the cities of Chinese Venice; the trip is requested at booking.

  8. Day 8

The last day without excursions: transfer to the airport without a guide and flight home. There is no time left for the city — only to pack your things and get to the terminal.
