About the programme

This is a journey through China from Beijing through Zhangjiajie to Shanghai — eight days during which the country manages to change its face several times. First the capital with its imperial rituals and the sky to which rulers prayed, then the mountains and caves in Zhangjiajie, and finally Shanghai with its gardens, towers and river. The pace of the trip is uneven: in Beijing and Zhangjiajie the days are dense, with transfers and ascents, in Shanghai the rhythm becomes calmer, free time appears. Two domestic flights — Beijing–Zhangjiajie and Zhangjiajie–Shanghai — are built into the route as part of the program. The international flight is not included; it is worth arranging separately.

Who this suits: those who want to see China as different — from temples and parks to karst caves and a glass bridge — and are not afraid of transfers. Nature lovers will have something to look at here: Tianzi Mountains, Baofeng Lake, the cave and the bridge over the abyss. For those looking for beach holidays, this program is not about that: there is exactly as much water here as is needed for a walk along the river and the lake.

The rhythm changes by day: the first two days in Beijing are walks through temples and parks, the third is a flight and a transfer, the fourth and fifth are the most packed, with an ascent by cable car and a descent by elevator. The sixth and seventh are already Shanghai, where you can breathe out and look at the city from above and from the river. The eighth is only breakfast, check-out and transfer to the airport.

What is important to remember: entrance tickets to the sights, breakfasts and the meals indicated in the program, the guide and transport for the excursion are included. The international flight and insurance against non-departure are not. The weather may make its own adjustments, especially where the ascent to the mountains and walks along the bridge are concerned.

Day-by-day itinerary

  1. Day 1

The first day begins with arrival in Beijing, a meeting at the airport and lunch in a Chinese cuisine restaurant. Then — the Temple of Heaven, which is considered one of the symbols of the city: for centuries emperors came here to ask Heaven for a good harvest. This place sets the tone for the whole trip — an unhurried acquaintance with imperial China. After the excursion — transfer to the hotel, check-in and rest.

  2. Day 2

The day is devoted to two long walks. First — the Great Wall of China, moreover a section without a cable car, that is, the ascent and descent on foot. After lunch — the Summer Palace, the summer residence of the emperors with picturesque landscapes. This is a day of contrasts: the stern wall and the soft views of the park. Return to the hotel.

  3. Day 3

In the morning — breakfast and departure from the hotel with luggage. A walk through the Zoo, where the Giant Panda House is located, with lunch of traditional Chinese cuisine. Then transfer to the airport and a flight to Zhangjiajie — the city from which the mountain part of the route begins. On arrival — transfer to the hotel, check-in and rest.

  4. Day 4

The first full day in Zhangjiajie is the most packed of the trip. A boat ride on Baofeng Lake among rocks of bizarre shape is replaced by a descent into the Yellow Dragon Cave, one of the most beautiful karst caves. And then — a walking tour along the glass bridge: 430 meters long, 6 wide and 300 high. The day ends with dinner and an overnight stay at the hotel.

  5. Day 5

In the morning — an ascent by cable car to the Tianzi Mountains, whose landscapes, according to some Chinese sources, served as the prototype for the mountains in the film Avatar. Then — an excursion around Avatar and a descent by the Hundred Dragons Elevator, dinner. After that — transfer to the airport and a flight to Shanghai. On arrival — a meeting and transfer to the hotel, rest.

  6. Day 6

The first day in Shanghai begins with the Yu Garden — a park ensemble with ponds and picturesque structures. Then — the Oriental Pearl TV Tower with an observation deck, from which a view of the city opens. The Shanghai History Museum completes the program. After the excursion with lunch — return to the hotel.

  7. Day 7

The day is devoted to two places. First — the Jade Buddha Temple: here you can see two statues made of jade — one sitting, weighing a ton, and the other lying, decorated with stones. Then — a water cruise along the Huangpu River, about 50 minutes. After lunch in a Chinese cuisine restaurant — return to the hotel and free time.

  8. Day 8

The final day: breakfast at the hotel, check-out and transfer to the airport for departure from China. There are no more excursions or transfers — only the road home.
