Tours to Cyprus: what to know

Holidays in Cyprus from Atyrau are most often planned for June or September: the sea is warm, and there is no exhausting heat. You will have to fly with a transfer — there are no direct flights from Atyrau, the route is built through Almaty or Istanbul, the journey takes about a day. High season is July and August, the cheapest is from November to March. Swimming is most comfortable from May to October, excursions are available all year round.

Preparing for the trip: documents and packing

Packing in Atyrau begins long before the suitcase: first the papers, then the things. Processing takes time, but then holidays in Cyprus go without delays.

What to arrange in advance

A trip to Cyprus requires preparation, and the main thing here is not to put off the papers until the last week. The application is submitted through the consulate or visa center, and the processing time is planned with a margin. For tours to Cyprus from Atyrau, the package is usually assembled by the operator, but copies should be kept at hand. Check the requirements before submitting, they change. Holidays in Cyprus are calmer when all formalities are closed in advance.

Insurance, documents and booking

A medical policy with coverage from 30 thousand euros is not a formality, but a condition of admission to the island. A copy of the insurance is kept in the phone and in a printout: it may be asked for at the border. Confirmation of accommodation booking is printed out — in Larnaca and Paphos it is sometimes asked for at the desk. Return tickets are also better to have in paper form. Documents are kept in one folder, and a scan of the passport — separately from the original. Take your own first-aid kit: usual medicines on the island may be called differently.

When is it better to plan a holiday?

The season on the island is long, but the difference between the months is noticeable. It is worth planning the trip based on the weather and on what kind of holiday is needed.

High season and weather by month

The peak falls on July and August, when the air warms up above 30 degrees. The sea during this period is warm, swimming is comfortable even in the evening. June and September are milder: the heat subsides, the water remains warm. In May and October not everyone swims, but excursions go on without exhausting heat. In winter, the coast is cool, swimming is replaced by walks. In spring the island turns green, and the beaches are empty. Holidays in Cyprus in the shoulder season are cheaper and quieter. For a trip with children, June or September is chosen. Ayia Napa and Protaras are noisy in summer, almost empty in winter.

SeasonMonthsWhat to expect
HighJuly — AugustHeat, warm sea, peak prices
MildJune, SeptemberWarm, fewer tourists
CalmMay, OctoberWalks, cool sea
LowNovember — MarchRain, quiet resorts

Low season: advantages and limitations

From November to March the island is quiet, prices are noticeably lower than in summer. Hotels in Larnaca and Paphos operate, but some beach bars are closed. The sea is cool, only the hardened swim. But excursions to Nicosia and around the villages go on without crowds. There is rain, but it is short, with sunny days in between. In winter there is snow in the mountains, people go there to ski. Holidays in Cyprus during this period are chosen by those who want calm. Cypriot winter is suitable for sightseeing.

How to get to the island

There are no direct flights from Atyrau, the route is built through major hubs. The journey takes a day, but connections allow you to choose a convenient time.

Routes with transfers from Atyrau

The time difference with Almaty is 3 hours in winter and 2 hours in summer: Cyprus changes its clocks (UTC+2 in winter, UTC+3 in summer), while Kazakhstan stays on UTC+5 all year round. Acclimatization is almost unnoticeable, you do not have to readjust. Tickets are taken in advance: in high season seats are snapped up quickly. Baggage on connections is better to check through to the final point.

Transfer from the airport and car rental

Larnaca airport receives most flights, from there they go to the resorts by transfer. It is worth ordering it in advance, especially in high season. Car rental requires an international driving permit. Traffic on the island is left-hand, people do not get used to this immediately. Parking in the center of Limassol and Nicosia is paid. Without a car it is difficult to see several cities in one trip. Public transport between resorts runs on schedule, but rarely. Taxi is available, however, over long distances it turns out expensive. Holidays in Cyprus with a car are noticeably freer.

What to consider on the spot

Everyday little things decide how calm the holiday will turn out. Money, communication and transport should be thought through before departure.

Money, cards and communication

The currency of the island is the euro, but in tourist areas dollars and cards are accepted. Cash will come in handy for villages and markets. Cards of Kazakhstani banks do not work everywhere, a reserve of cash for the first day is mandatory. A local SIM card is issued by passport. Roaming of Kazakhstani operators on the island is expensive, it is more profitable to buy local communication. ATMs are available in Larnaca, Limassol and Paphos, there are fewer in the villages. Tips are not mandatory, but it is customary to leave about 5–10% of the bill. Cypriot cuisine is generous with portions: meze, halloumi, souvlaki. In Ayia Napa and Protaras there are many restaurants with a Russian menu.

Transport between resorts and excursions

Buses connect the main cities, but run rarely, the schedule should be checked on the spot. Between Ayia Napa and Protaras the distance is small, in summer there are flights. To Nicosia they get from Larnaca, the journey takes about an hour. Excursions to the sights are better booked in advance in high season. In Nicosia they take into account the division of the city into Greek and Turkish parts, when crossing the border a passport is needed. Car rental gives freedom, but parking in the center is paid. Holidays in Cyprus without a car are possible if you base yourself in one city.

How to choose a destination for a holiday?

The island's resorts differ in character, and the choice sets the tone for the entire trip. Some need a beach and quiet, others need music until morning.

Beaches and family resorts

Beaches with the "Blue Flag" are found in Ayia Napa and Protaras, entry is free. Sunbeds and umbrellas are paid, it is worth taking a set for the whole day. Protaras is convenient for families: the sea is calm, the entry into the water is gentle. Larnaca is suitable for holidays with children, the city is compact. Paphos is quieter, and archaeological zones are nearby. Cypriot cuisine is liked by children: portions are large, many simple dishes. The sand on the eastern coast is finer, on the western coast it is more often pebbles. It is better to swim with little ones in bays where there are no waves.

ResortCharacterWho it suits
Ayia NapaNoisy, beachYoung people, couples
ProtarasCalm, familyFamilies with children
LarnacaUrban, convenientFamilies, transit
PaphosQuiet, historicalLovers of calm

Nightlife and quiet areas

Nightlife is concentrated in Ayia Napa: clubs work until morning in season. Limassol is also noisy, but more measured. Family holidays are more convenient in Protaras and Larnaca. A quiet one is in Paphos, where evenings pass quietly. Nicosia lives its own life all year round, there is less beach noise there. If you need both a beach and parties, take a base in Ayia Napa, and during the day travel around the island. Holidays in Cyprus in a quiet area are cheaper and quieter. The choice of area affects transport: from quiet places it is far to the clubs.
