Tours to Georgia: what to know
Tours to Georgia from Atyrau are a flight with a transfer through Almaty, Astana or Istanbul and a holiday by the sea or in the mountains. The best time for the beaches of Batumi, Kobuleti and Kvariati is from mid-June to September, the velvet season is September and the first half of October. The ski season in Gudauri and Bakuriani runs from December to March.
Visa, documents and money: what to consider before the trip?
Trips to Georgia from Atyrau begin with simple preparation, and the main thing here is to calmly gather money and things. Below — about cash, cards and exchange, and it is better to clarify the formalities in advance.
Visa-free regime and passport validity
Citizens of Kazakhstan do not need to arrange anything for a trip to Georgia. The passport validity is checked at the border, and the margin must be solid. Practice is as follows: the document must remain valid for at least six months after the planned return date. If less than six months remain until the end of the term, it is better to postpone the trip and deal with reissuing. Check the very possibility of entry and the exact requirements on the website of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Kazakhstan (https://www.gov.kz/memleket/entities/mfa, checked 04.09.2026). This rule works equally for tours to Tbilisi and for a short holiday in Batumi. Children also need their own document; being entered in a parent's passport is no longer practiced. Keep a copy of the passport separately from the original. It is calmer both at the airport and in the mountains of Svaneti.
| What is checked | Requirement |
|---|---|
| Visa for citizens of Kazakhstan | Nothing needs to be arranged |
| Passport validity | At least six months after return |
| Document for a child | Own passport |
| Being entered in a parent's passport | No longer practiced |
| Copy of passport | Keep separately from the original |

Cash, cards and currency exchange
Money in Georgia is lari, and bringing tenge or rubles with you is unprofitable. Exchange offices in Tbilisi and Batumi readily accept dollars and euros, the rate is noticeably better. Cards of Kazakhstani banks are not accepted everywhere, especially in Kutaisi, Gori and small towns. A reserve of cash for three to four days of expenses is mandatory. Withdraw money at ATMs of large banks, the commission is lower there. Small notes will be useful for minibuses and tips. A holiday in Georgia is cheaper if part of the amount is kept in lari and part in currency for exchange. The rate at the airport is traditionally worse than in the city. Do not exchange the whole amount at once. And keep money in two different places.
When to go: seasons and weather?
The weather in Georgia strongly depends on the region, and one month suits the sea, while another suits the mountains. Let's look at two main scenarios: the beaches of Adjara and the winter slopes.
Sea and velvet season in Adjara
The best time for swimming in Batumi and Kobuleti is from mid-June to September. The water warms up by the end of June; at the beginning of the month it is still bracing. July and August are the hottest and most humid, the air stays above thirty degrees. The velvet season in Adjara is September and the first half of October. The sea remains warm, and there is no exhausting heat anymore. In Kvariati and Ureki in September it is calmer and freer than at the height of summer. Take light clothing, a hat and sunscreen. In the evening by the sea it can be cool, a thin jacket will not hurt. Rain in Adjara falls more often than in the rest of Georgia, an umbrella will be useful. For a family holiday in Georgia, September is often more convenient than July.
Ski season and spring excursions
Skiing in Gudauri and Bakuriani is best from December to March. Snow remains on the slopes until April, but by the end of the season it is heavier and wetter. In December the slopes are not yet ready everywhere, but there are fewer people. January and February are the peak, accommodation is booked in advance. Spring in Georgia is the time for excursions around Kakheti and Borjomi. There is no heat, there are fewer tourists, the roads are freer. April and May are good for Tbilisi, Kutaisi and ancient cities. Going to Svaneti in spring is too early, mountain roads may be closed. Plan the trip so as not to mix skiing and the beach in one week. The difference in altitude and weather is too great.
How to get there and where to stay
The journey from Atyrau takes a whole day, so the route and accommodation are thought out in advance. Below — about flights and about where to stay.
Routes through Almaty, Astana and Istanbul
There are no direct flights from Atyrau to the cities of Georgia; the route is built with a transfer. The most convenient is to fly through Almaty: from there there are direct flights to Tbilisi and Batumi. Travel time is about three to four hours. Through Astana the option also works, but the transfer is usually longer. Istanbul gives more connections and is suitable if you want to stay in Turkey for a day. The time difference with Georgia is one hour; in Georgia it is one hour earlier than in Kazakhstan. It is more convenient to take the return flight with a margin for the connection. Check in baggage on two segments to the final point. Then in the transfer city you will not have to collect the suitcase.
Choosing accommodation: from Batumi to Svaneti
Accommodation in Georgia is chosen for the purpose of the trip, and not the other way around. In Batumi and Kobuleti these are apartments by the sea, there are many of them and they differ in price. In Tbilisi it is more convenient to stay in the center, near the metro. Kutaisi is cheaper and quieter, from there it is convenient to travel to Borjomi and Svaneti. In Gudauri and Bakuriani accommodation is near the ski lifts, otherwise you will have to drive. In Svaneti guest houses are the main option; the booking is agreed in advance. Kvariati and Ureki are suitable for those who want a calm holiday in Georgia without noisy streets. Look at heating in winter and air conditioning in summer. These are two details on which hosts most often save.
What to see and what to do
Georgia offers a choice between the sea and the mountains, and in one trip it is realistic to cover both directions. We will tell you about the beaches and about the routes in the mountains.
Beaches, Kvariati and Ureki
Kvariati is a quiet place near Batumi, people go there for a calm sea. The beach is pebbly, the water is cleaner than within the city limits. Ureki is famous for its magnetic sand, people come here to improve their health. In Batumi the beach is long, but in summer it is crowded, especially in August. In Kobuleti housing is cheaper and there is less noise than in the center of Batumi. The magnetic sand in Ureki is warm even in September, swimming is comfortable. On pebble beaches you need water shoes. Take them with you, the choice on site is worse. A holiday in Georgia by the sea is convenient to plan like this: a week in Batumi, a couple of days in Kvariati.
Mountains, trekking and ancient cities
The mountains are the second half of a Georgian trip, and they are no worse than the sea. In Svaneti the routes range from easy walks to multi-day treks. Gudauri in winter is skiing, in summer short ascents and views of the Caucasus. Borjomi is known for its park and mineral water. Gori is interesting for its ancient fortress and views of the surroundings. In Kutaisi people see the cathedral and the old town. Tbilisi is worth two or three days: sulfur baths, old quarters, the cable car. Some mountain routes are closed in winter, check the route on site. To Svaneti the roads are winding, the journey takes more time than it seems on the map. Plan transfers with a margin.
What to consider on the trip
Small everyday details decide whether the trip will be calm or troublesome. Below is about communication, medicine, transport and tips.
Communication, insurance and medicine
Buying a SIM card of a local operator in Georgia is easy, you need a passport. The internet is available almost everywhere, in the mountains there are interruptions. Medical insurance for the trip is not mandatory, but it is worth getting. In Batumi and Tbilisi the clinics are good, in Svaneti and Gudauri the choice is smaller. Pharmacies are in every city, it is better to take familiar medicines with you. Tap water in most places is drinkable, but when traveling around the regions bottled is more reliable. If you plan trekking, the insurance must cover active recreation. This is a separate option, ask about it in advance. Keep the clinic's contacts in your phone.
Transport between cities and tips
Between cities in Georgia, minibuses and trains are convenient. The train from Tbilisi to Batumi takes several hours and costs little. Around Adjara it is easier to get around by taxi or a rented car. To Svaneti and to Gudauri the roads are mountainous and winding, some routes are closed in winter. Tips in Georgia are not mandatory, but in restaurants ten percent is often included in the bill. Check the receipt before leaving anything on top. In a taxi it is better to agree on the price before the trip. Drivers in the regions rarely turn on the meter.
Briefly
- There are no direct flights from Atyrau, the route is built through Almaty, Astana or Istanbul with one transfer.
- Swimming in Adjara is most comfortable from mid-June to September, calmer in September and October.
- In winter it is worth going to Gudauri and Bakuriani, in spring for sightseeing tours in Tbilisi, Kutaisi and Borjomi.
- Accommodation is chosen for the goal: the sea in Batumi and Kobuleti, the mountains in Svaneti and near the ski lifts.
- It is more profitable to bring money in dollars or euros, and get insurance in advance, especially for trekking.
