About the programme

Eight days in Georgia is a trip in which mountains, wine and ancient stones intertwine more tightly than it seems from the names of cities. The base is the same all the time — Tbilisi, and this sets a special rhythm: you live in the capital, and each excursion day you go off to the side — either east to wine and fortresses, or north to monasteries, or to the cave city. The road does not take up the whole day, so the return always leaves strength for a walk around the city on your own.

The first day is arrival and complete freedom: no excursions, only the hotel and Tbilisi beyond its walls. Then the program alternates packed excursion days with free ones, and this alternation is the main thing worth knowing in advance. Two days are given to Kakheti and Mtskheta, one to a walking tour of the city itself, another to a route toward Gori. Between them are free days, when you can sleep in or take an additional trip.

Kakheti is about wine in two different traditions: a factory with tanks and a family cellar, where they go down for chacha from melon and wine without additives. Mtskheta is about antiquity, monasteries on a hill and in a rock, a view of the confluence of two rivers. The road to Gori is about the cave city and a surprisingly large-scale monument, which people go to for a shot. Tbilisi in this program is sulfur baths, a market and streets that you walk on foot, examining the facades.

Free days are not emptiness in the schedule, but an opportunity to add what was not included in the main program. For an additional fee, an ascent to the Kazbegi mountains with lunch is offered — such a trip is possible in season, as well as a visit to a private residence with a collection of cars and exhibits. The cost of transport for these options is determined on the spot by the number of those interested, and it is better to clarify this when booking.

This trip is for those who do not want to change hotels every two days, who are ready for early departures on excursion days and for complete independence on free days. The flight is not included in the price, lunches and dinners outside the program are not either, so the budget should be planned with a margin. The nights are all the time in Tbilisi, and the airport on the first and last day is near the city.

Day-by-day itinerary

  1. Day 1

    Arrival in Tbilisi and check-in — then no program, only a free evening and the city at your disposal. This is a day for acclimatization: without waking up by an alarm and without a guide, you can simply leave the hotel and go wherever your eyes look. Overnight in Tbilisi.

  2. Day 2

    The most packed day of the trip: the road leads to Kakheti, to wine and fortress walls. First a wine factory, where wine is poured straight from tanks, then Bodbe Monastery — a place connected with Saint Nino, and the town of Sighnaghi, where they climb the fortress wall and look at the Alazani Valley. At a local winemaker they taste chacha from melon and wines of different varieties — what you like can be bought from the host. On the way back — a stop for photos at Manavi Fortress, from where a view of Kakheti and the Caucasus Mountains opens. Overnight in Tbilisi.

  3. Day 3

    A day that you spend on your feet, without trips out of town: a walking tour of Tbilisi takes several hours. It begins at the Sulfur Baths, which are called the heart of the city, then the underground Meidan Bazaar, where they taste and buy cheese and other Georgian products. Then Sharden Street with the Gabriadze Puppet Theater from the outside and Orbeliani Square. You return home on your own, the metro is near the hotels, and the evening is free.

  4. Day 4

    A day about antiquity: the road to Mtskheta, to monasteries on a hill and in a rock. The first stop is Jvari Monastery, from where you can see how the Aragvi and the Kura merge. The second is Svetitskhoveli Cathedral, one of the largest church buildings in the country. Then — free time for lunch at your own expense, and the continuation of the route to Shio-Mgvime Monastery, where they examine the church and the underground prison, if it is accessible. Return to Tbilisi and overnight.

  5. Day 5

    A day without a program and without a guide — entirely yours. You can take your time, walk around the city or simply rest after three packed days. Overnight in Tbilisi.

  6. Day 6

    A route toward Gori and the cave city: first the Stalin House-Museum, then the ascent to the fortress wall. Then — Uplistsikhe, and free time is set aside for lunch, you can eat at your own expense. On the way back — a stop at the Tbilisi Sea for the Chronicles of Georgia monument, which impresses with the scale of columns with bas-reliefs. Drop-off at the hotels, overnight in Tbilisi.

  7. Day 7

    A free day that can be filled with additional trips for an additional fee. Among the options for an extra charge are an ascent to the Kazbegi mountains with lunch and a glass of chacha, such a trip is possible in season, as well as a visit to a private residence with a collection of cars and exhibits. The cost of transport is determined on the spot by the number of people, so it is worth clarifying this when booking, if desired. Overnight in Tbilisi.

  8. Day 8

    Breakfast, check-out from the hotel and transfer to Tbilisi airport. Then — flight home.
