Tours to Azerbaijan: what to know
Tours to Azerbaijan from Atyrau — this is a flight via Almaty or Aktau, since there are no direct flights. The best time for a holiday in Azerbaijan is May, June and September: it is warm in Baku and comfortable in the mountains. In winter, it is worth going to Naftalan and Shahdag for the mild climate and snow.
How to get to Azerbaijan from Atyrau?
The journey to Azerbaijan from Atyrau is rarely direct, and the route should be thought through in advance. Such trips are most often built via a connection in Almaty or Aktau.
Flight routes with connections in Almaty and Aktau
It is most convenient to fly with a transfer in Almaty, where the choice of flights to Baku is wider. From Atyrau to Almaty takes a couple of hours, then to the capital of Azerbaijan — about three more. A connection in Aktau is shorter geographically, but there are fewer flights, and the wait between them is longer. When transferring in Almaty, allow at least three hours for the connection. Tickets for connecting flights are booked under one reservation, otherwise if there is a delay the first segment will be lost. Check whether the baggage flies to the final destination or whether it needs to be collected and checked in again. Before departure, check the travel time and flight days — the schedule changes by season.
Overland route across the Caspian: ferry and buses
The overland route across the Caspian is chosen by those who value a leisurely holiday in Azerbaijan. First you need to get to Aktau, then take a ferry to Baku. The ferry depends on the weather, and waiting at the port sometimes drags on for a day or more. Cabins are booked in advance, but no one guarantees the exact departure time. Part of the journey can be covered by bus, but such trips are tiring and connect poorly with each other. For a short trip this option is unprofitable. The overland route is worth choosing if you have a reserve of time and a desire to see the sea along the way.
What documents and money are needed for the trip?
Preparing papers and money takes more time than it seems, and it is worth starting in advance. Tours are more convenient to book when the main formalities have already been settled.
Validity of documents and visa regime
Check the validity of the document and the entry rules in official sources before buying tickets. We do not provide visa and migration consultations here — this is outside our competence. There is one practical tip: check that the validity of the document covers the trip with a margin, and clarify the current requirements in advance. Data on entry rules changes, so check with official sources before departure. If you have several documents, take the one under which the tickets were issued. When transferring in Almaty or Aktau, the document will also be needed for the domestic segment.
Cash manats, exchange and bank cards
Cash manats are needed in markets, in small towns and in taxis outside Baku. Cards are accepted mainly in the capital and large hotels; in the regions — rarely. Exchanging tenge directly is difficult, so bring dollars or withdraw money from ATMs in Baku. The rate at exchangers near markets is usually better than at the airport. Keep part of the amount in small notes — change is not always given for large ones. For a holiday in Azerbaijan, take a reserve of cash for two or three days ahead if you are going to Naftalan or Sheki.
| What to take | Where it will be useful | Where it will not be useful |
|---|---|---|
| Cash manats | Markets, taxis, small towns | Large hotels in Baku |
| Bank card | Baku, chain stores | Mountain villages, markets |
| Dollars for exchange | Exchangers, banks | Small shops |
Weather by region and what to put in the suitcase
The climate in Azerbaijan is heterogeneous, and in one trip you can encounter both heat and cold. When packing your suitcase, focus on two regions at once.
Temperature difference between Baku and mountain resorts
In summer it is hot and humid in Baku, while in the mountains it is noticeably cooler — the difference is felt even in one day. In Gabala and on Shahdag you need a sweater in the evening, although it is warm during the day. In winter the capital is damp and windy, while at altitude there is snow. In spring and autumn it often rains in Sheki and Gabala. Therefore, the suitcase should contain both light clothes and insulated ones. If you are traveling through several cities, take layers — this makes it easier to adapt to the weather.
Seasonal clothing for Naftalan and Shahdag
In winter in Naftalan and on Shahdag you need a warm windproof jacket, gloves and shoes with non-slip soles. In Naftalan winter is damp and chilly, so waterproof outerwear is more important than warm outerwear. On Shahdag there is snow, and without insulated boots it is uncomfortable to walk. In spring and autumn in these places a compact umbrella and a jacket with a hood will come in handy. In summer at altitude it is cool in the evenings, so a light windbreaker is not superfluous. Thermal underwear helps both in winter and in the off-season. Warm socks and spare gloves are a small thing that saves you on walks.
Movement within the country and accommodation
Distances between the cities of Azerbaijan are considerable, and it is better to plan transfers in advance. Accommodation in popular places is snapped up quickly, especially on holidays.
Transport between Baku, Gabala and Sheki
In Baku it is convenient to get around by metro and taxi via an app; in the regions — arrange a transfer in advance. Buses and minibuses run between the capital, Gabala, Sheki and Naftalan, but the journey takes hours. To Gabala it takes about three hours, to Sheki — noticeably longer. Tickets for intercity routes are better bought the day before; seats run out. Renting a car gives freedom, but mountain roads require experience. For a short trip it is more convenient to combine transfer and public transport. Plan transfers with a margin so as not to arrive at the hotel at night.
Booking hotels in high season
In high season, hotels in Gabala and on Shahdag are booked up in advance, sometimes months ahead. New Year holidays and July-August are peak demand, prices are higher during this time. In mountain hotels, heating may be weak, so check when booking whether there is a heater in the room. Ask about the transfer from the bus station — it is not included everywhere. Read reviews about breakfast: in remote hotels the choice of dishes is modest. Book with free cancellation if plans may shift.
Gastronomy, communications and local customs
Food, communications and respect for traditions are three things worth thinking about before departure. They noticeably affect the impression of the trip.
Features of Azerbaijani cuisine and dietary restrictions
Azerbaijani cuisine is hearty and spicy: dolma, kutabs, piti, lamb shashlik, tea with white cherry jam. A vegetarian and a person with dietary restrictions should clarify the composition of dishes in advance — there is a lot of meat and melted butter. In Baku there are restaurants with a European menu, in the regions the choice is narrower. Portions are large, and it is worth ordering gradually. Tea is drunk here constantly, often with sweets. If you do not eat spicy food, ask not to add spices. Dinner in Gabala or Sheki is better to order in advance — the kitchen works by the hour.
SIM card, first aid kit and respect for traditions
A local SIM card with internet is issued by passport, this is convenient for maps and calling a taxi. It is better to bring first aid kits with usual medicines with you: the assortment in pharmacies differs from Kazakhstan's. Sockets and voltage in Azerbaijan coincide with Kazakhstan's, an adapter is not needed. Treat local customs with respect: modest clothing in rural areas and when visiting holy places. Photographing people without permission is not worth it. When visiting, it is customary to take off shoes. These little things endear local residents to you.
| Resort | Season | What to take |
|---|---|---|
| Baku | Year-round | Light in summer, raincoat in winter |
| Gabala | May–October | Sweater for the evening, umbrella |
| Naftalan | Year-round | Waterproof jacket, warm shoes |
| Shahdag | December–March | Down jacket, gloves, boots |
Visa and entry rules change: check with the primary source — the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Azerbaijan, https://www.mfa.gov.az/ru. The information on this page was verified on 17.09.2026.
Briefly
- The best months for the trip are May, June and September, in winter choose Naftalan.
- Cash manats will come in handy outside Baku, cards are not accepted everywhere.
- Hotels in Gabala and on Shahdag are booked in advance, especially during holidays.
