About the programme

Seven days in Azerbaijan, where the capital meets the mountains, and ancient traditions meet modern architecture. The route begins in Baku, goes to the Absheron Peninsula with its fire and temples, and then leads north, to the Gudiyalchay river valley, to high-mountain villages and waterfalls of the Greater Caucasus.

The first days are Baku in three dimensions: a panorama from the Highland Park, the embankment by the Caspian Sea and the labyrinths of the old city. Here the rhythm is a stroll, with stops for photographs and tea, and in the evening you can stay on Nizami Street, where architecture of different styles is illuminated and the city becomes similar to a European one.

The middle of the trip is outings outside the city: the fire worshippers' temple and the burning mountain, where natural gas comes to the surface and ignites. These are days of contemplation and unhurried journeys around the peninsula, with lunch in a national restaurant for an additional fee.

Then the route changes character: Baku is left behind, and the group ascends to Quba, to the Gudiyalchay river valley, surrounded by the mountains of the Greater Caucasus. Here the day is packed — the village of Khinalug on the mountain slope, the Afurja waterfall in the Tengalty gorge and the Tebii Minarya natural monument. The night is at Macara Quba Hotel 5*.

The return journey to Baku is through a sightseeing tour of Quba with the mosque, the bridge and the Red Settlement, a Jewish village on the river bank. The last day is free time in the capital and a transfer to the airport. This route will be appreciated by those for whom it is important to see both the city and the mountains, and who are ready for the journeys between them.

Day-by-day itinerary

  1. Day 1

    Arrival in Baku, transfer to the hotel and check-in — a day of gathering the group, when everyone is just getting acquainted with the city and with each other. Free time can be spent as desired: for an additional fee, a tour to the carpet museum with its unusual architecture and a welcome dinner at the Shirvanshah restaurant-museum, where antique furniture, national cuisine and music create the atmosphere of old Baku, are available. The pace of the day is calm, without a mandatory program.

  2. Day 2

    The sightseeing tour of Baku begins from the highest point of the tour — the Highland Park, from where a panorama of the city opens up and the main photographs are taken. Then the group descends to the sea to the Seaside Boulevard, the longest seaside embankment in the world according to the book of records. The second part of the day is the old city of Icherisheher with the Palace of the Shirvanshahs and the Maiden Tower, and the stroll ends on Nizami Street, where architecture of different styles looks especially beautiful under illumination. The pace of the day is packed, but on foot.

  3. Day 3

    A day of an outing to the Absheron Peninsula: first the Ateshgah fire worshippers' temple, where natural gas comes out of the ground and ignites upon contact with oxygen. This place combines history, Zoroastrianism and an unusual atmosphere. Then — the settlement of Mehemmedli and the Yanar Dagh hill, the only place of natural gas outlet preserved on the peninsula, where the mountain burns in the literal sense of the word. Lunch in a national restaurant is for an additional fee. The pace of the day is measured, with journeys.

  4. Day 4

    This day is dedicated to modern architecture: a visit to the Heydar Aliyev Center, a building designed by Zaha Hadid with smooth lines and without sharp edges. Inside are expositions about the history and culture of Azerbaijan, personal belongings and photographs of Heydar Aliyev. Lunch in a national restaurant is for an additional fee. The day is short and calm, with a return to the hotel and free time.

  5. Day 5

    Departure with luggage from the Baku hotel and a journey north, to Quba, to the picturesque valley of the Gudiyalchay river, surrounded by the mountains of the Greater Caucasus. The tour begins with the village of Khinalug on the slope of Mount Kyzylgaya at an altitude of 2100–2200 meters — a place with its own language, customs, the tomb of Khidir Nabi and many mosques. Then — the Afurja waterfall in the Tengalty gorge with a height of 75 meters, and the day ends at the Tebii Minarya natural monument, which serves as a natural bridge. Accommodation at Macara Quba Hotel 5*. The day is the most packed and mountainous of the entire trip.

  6. Day 6

    Before returning to Baku — a stroll around Quba: the Juma Mosque, the Arched Bridge and the Red Settlement, a Jewish village by the Gudiyalchay river. The local inhabitants call themselves Juhuri, and their language is Mountain Jewish. Then a journey to Baku and accommodation at the hotel. The day is transitional: half of it takes place in Quba, half — on the road, the pace is moderate.

  7. Day 7

    The last day is free time in Baku before the transfer to the airport. You can independently go to the Yashil Bazar for spices and souvenirs, to shopping centers or to the Fountain Square near Nizami Street, and also return to Icherisheher. Late check-out from the hotel is possible for an additional fee, and luggage for a late flight is allowed to be left at the hotel. The pace of the day is free, without a mandatory program.
