About the programme
This trip is about how to see several different Azerbaijans at once in a few days: the capital with its modern architecture and ancient fortress, desert landscapes with rock carvings and mud volcanoes, the fiery places of Absheron and the green foothills of Shamakhi. The pace is calm: no one rushes you anywhere, the program includes both busy excursion days and a full day of free time in Baku.
Baku in this program is shown from two sides. On one hand, it is a city of glass waves and glowing towers, where modern buildings coexist with the boulevard and parks. On the other hand, there is the Old City, where you get literally through an arch and find yourself among narrow streets, caravanserais and ancient mosques. The transition between these two Bakus is one of the main impressions of the trip.
Outside the city, completely different landscapes await you. Gobustan is a reserve with ancient petroglyphs and a museum where history is shown through interactive screens. The mud volcanoes look like something unearthly, and Absheron is a place where fire comes out from under the ground and burns by itself. The road takes a little time, but the impressions change greatly.
Shamakhi is a separate day with a different mood. It is an ancient capital with mausoleums and the largest mosque in the Caucasus, and here you can also visit a winery and an alpaca farm. The combination of historical places and communication with animals makes this day unlike the others.
The trip is suitable for those who want to see both the city, nature, and history without moving from place to place every day: you spend all nights in Baku, and go to Shamakhi and Gobustan as one-day outings. The flight is not included in the price, it must be arranged separately.
Day-by-day itinerary
Day 1
Arrival in Baku and meeting at the airport, then free time. You can walk along Nizami pedestrian street, where shops and boutiques coexist with old commercial buildings, or go out to the Seaside Boulevard. If the season allows, it is worth taking a boat ride around Baku Bay — this is for an additional fee. Also on this day you can look into large shopping centers or the New Year fair on Fountain Square.
Day 2
This is a day of getting to know Baku — from modern architecture to the ancient fortress. It all starts with the Heydar Aliyev Center, whose abstract waves and peaks are interesting to look at from different angles, and with the Flame Towers complex. Then you go up to Highland Park, from where a panorama of the city opens, and go down to the boulevard — to the Carpet Museum and Little Venice with its canals and bridges. Then the route passes through the Philharmonic Garden and you enter the Old City: here it is worth seeing the Maiden Tower and the Palace of the Shirvanshahs, but museum tickets are optional. Lunch in a restaurant of the Old City can be ordered separately, it is not included in the base rate.
Day 3
The day is spent on an outing from Baku toward Gobustan and Absheron. In the Gobustan Reserve you will see rock carvings and petroglyphs, and the museum with touch screens and 3D video will show what the life of ancient people looked like. Then — the tourist complex of mud volcanoes, where they will tell about their properties. The second part of the day is the Land of Fire: an excursion to the Ateshgah temple and the Yanar Dagh nature reserve, where the flame burns continuously. This part of the program is for an additional fee, as are museum tickets.
Day 4
This is the most relaxed day of the trip — completely free, with a late breakfast at the hotel. You can again go to the New Year fair on Fountain Square: there are more than forty stalls with gifts, souvenirs and food, including kutabs, lula kebab and chestnuts, as well as hot drinks. Having gotten hungry, it is worth trying Azerbaijani persimmon, which becomes especially sweet by winter. The second half of the day can be spent on Nizami street, where the illumination and atmosphere are conducive to a leisurely walk.
Day 5
This is a day in Shamakhi — an ancient capital with a different atmosphere. On the way, the first stop is at the Diri Baba mausoleum in the village of Maraza: the structure is built into the rock and seems to be floating. In Shamakhi itself you will see the Yeddi Gumbaz mausoleum and the Juma Mosque — the largest in the Caucasus. Then — the Azgranata winery, where you can walk through the cellars and taste wines, but this is for an additional fee, as are entrance tickets. The day ends at the alpaca farm: the animals can be petted, fed and photographed, and there are other activities on the territory.
Day 6
Breakfast at the hotel, departure and transfer to the airport. If there is time left before the flight, you can look into the local Yashil Bazar — the Green Bazaar, where fresh fruits, dried fruits, honey, homemade cheeses, feijoa and walnut jams, as well as black caviar are sold.
