About the programme

Six days in Azerbaijan is a trip in which antiquity and modernity stand literally two steps away from each other. You will stay in Baku, and from there you will venture out to the mountains, to the mud volcanoes and to the subtropics — but each time return to the city, to its boulevards, lights and the smell of tea.

The rhythm of the trip is uneven, and that is its main charm. One day is a continuous sea of impressions: architecture, old stones, rock carvings. The next is deliberately empty, given over to walks without a plan. Such a contrast gives the opportunity both to breathe one's fill and to rest.

The route leads from Baku to Gobustan and to Absheron, and then — to the south, to Lankaran, to where the air smells of citrus. The landscapes change dramatically: the rocky plateau gives way to subtropical forest, the noisy highway — to the silence of the national park.

The trip will suit those who like to combine cities with nature and are not afraid to spend a couple of hours on the road for the sake of a view of the mountains or a lake. Here there will be history, and food, and the opportunity simply to wander through unfamiliar streets without a guide.

Day-by-day itinerary

  1. Day 1

Arrival, meeting at the airport and transfer to the hotel — a day that remains entirely at your disposal. If you have strength after the journey, it is worth going out to Nizami pedestrian street or walking to the Seaside Boulevard, founded in 1909: here both locals and guests of the city stroll. You can take a ride along Baku Bay — but only in season. Another opportunity is to wander through shopping centres or look in at the festive fair in the city centre.

  2. Day 2

The most packed day of the trip: from modern architecture — to medieval streets, all in one walk. You will start with the Heydar Aliyev Centre and Flame Towers Baku, ascend to the Alley of Martyrs and the Highland Park, from where a panorama of the city opens up, and then descend to the boulevard to the Carpet Museum and Little Venice. Through the Philharmonic Garden you will reach Icherisheher, where the Maiden Tower, the Palace of the Shirvanshahs, ancient caravanserais and souvenir shops await you. Lunch in a national restaurant of the Old City — for an additional fee. Tickets to the museums of the Old City are also purchased at will.

  3. Day 3

A day dedicated to earth and fire: you will leave the city to see places where, according to legend, civilization was born. In the Gobustan Reserve — rock carvings and petroglyphs, and in the local museum one can examine antiquity through interactive screens. Further — the mud volcanoes, which NASA geologists compare with the relief of Mars. An excursion to the Land of Fire — to the Ateshgah temple and the Yanar Dagh reserve — at will and for an additional fee, as are the tickets to these museums.

  4. Day 4

A day without a programme: a late breakfast and free time. We advise returning to the New Year fair on Fountain Square — here there are more than forty stalls with souvenirs and food, and on the stage local performers appear and competitions take place. Having grown hungry, one can try potato shavings, kutabs, lula kebab or roasted chestnuts, and warm up — with tea from a samovar. The pace of the day is measured, there is no need to hurry anywhere.

  5. Day 5

The trip to the south, to Lankaran, takes about two and a half hours — and brings you to the subtropics. Here it is worth seeing the Lankaran Fortress and the House of Mirahmad Khan, built by French architects. On the way — a stop in the Citrus Valley: the hostess will tell about the cultivation of fruit, and in season one can both take part in the harvest and simply try the local oranges, lemons and tangerines. Lunch in village style — at will and for an additional fee. The day will end in Hirkan National Park and at Lake Khanbulan, where there are neither cafes nor campsites — only forest.

  6. Day 6

Breakfast, check-out from the hotel and transfer to the airport. If there is time left before departure, it can be spent at the local Yashil Bazar: there among the counters one will find both honey, and homemade cheeses, and sweet preserves of nuts and feijoa. This is the last opportunity to take away with you the taste of the trip.
