Tours to Uzbekistan: what to know

Spring and autumn are the best time for a trip to Uzbekistan: in April, May, September and October it is warm without exhausting heat. Tours to Uzbekistan from Atyrau in these months are booked most often, so hotels in Samarkand and Bukhara are reserved several weeks in advance. In winter the trip is cheaper, but some summer cafes are closed. In summer, cities are explored in the morning and evening, during the day people take shelter in the shade.

When is the best time to plan a trip to Uzbekistan?

Planning a holiday in Uzbekistan depends on the weather and the season. Such trips from Atyrau are conveniently scheduled for spring or autumn.

Spring and autumn months: mild weather and high demand

April, May, September and October are considered the best months for a trip to Uzbekistan. During the day it is warm here, but without exhausting heat, and in the evening a light jacket is enough. It is these weeks that account for the peak of demand. Hotels in Samarkand and Bukhara near the main squares are snapped up several weeks in advance. The destination from Atyrau in high season is better booked in advance. Mild weather allows you to walk around the old cities all day. In spring the gardens bloom, in autumn the bazaars are full of fruit. This is the most comfortable time for a holiday in Uzbekistan.

Summer heat and winter season: how to avoid discomfort

In summer, Uzbekistan experiences strong heat, especially in Bukhara and Khiva. Sightseeing on such days is reasonable to split into morning and evening. During the day it is better to wait it out in a chaikhana or an air-conditioned museum. In winter, it is cool in Tashkent and Samarkand, but there is almost never snow. Such trips in winter are cheaper, and there are noticeably fewer tourists. The cities are quiet at this time, there are no queues at the minarets. However, some courtyards and summer cafes are closed. Warm clothes will come in handy on a winter trip.

What to consider when preparing for a holiday in Uzbekistan

Preparation for a trip to Uzbekistan begins with money, communications and clothing. These little things have the strongest influence on the impression of the holiday.

Documents, registration and currency exchange

Citizens of Kazakhstan need only a passport for a trip to Uzbekistan. Its validity period must cover the entire period of the trip. If a guest stays in a hotel, the hotel itself handles the registration. When staying in private accommodation, the owner resolves this issue. Currency exchange in Uzbekistan is done at banks and official exchange offices. The rate on the market may differ, and the risk of getting problematic banknotes there is higher. It is worth keeping the exchange receipt until the end of the holiday. Destinations from Atyrau usually include tips on these formalities.

Cash, cards and local communications

Cards from Kazakh banks are not accepted everywhere in Uzbekistan. At bazaars, in taxis and small cafes it is safer to pay in cash in soums. Large hotels and restaurants in Tashkent accept cards without problems. A local SIM card with internet is issued with a passport, it takes a few minutes. Communications are needed for maps and calling a taxi via an app. A taxi ride via an app in Uzbekistan is cheaper than hailing a car on the street. Keep cash for small expenses at hand.

Payment methodWhere it worksReliability
Cash in soumsBazaars, taxis, cafesHigh
Card of a Kazakh bankLarge hotels, restaurantsMedium
Exchange at a bankBank branchesHigh
Exchange at the marketMarkets and exchange officesLower, there is a risk

Clothing and footwear for the old cities

In the old cities of Uzbekistan there are many walking routes over stone and tiles. Comfortable footwear with a soft sole is more important here than a smart appearance. Women in active mosques and mausoleums should have a headscarf and covered shoulders. In summer, a headpiece and light clothing made of natural fabrics will come in handy. In Samarkand and Bukhara the sun scorches during the day even in September. In the evening in the desert cities it can be cool, a light jacket is not superfluous. Clothing for a holiday in Uzbekistan should be modest and comfortable.

How to build a route through the cities of Uzbekistan?

A route through Uzbekistan is conveniently built along the railway. The cities are connected by high-speed trains and short car transfers.

Tashkent, Samarkand and Bukhara: transfers on Afrosiyob

The high-speed train Afrosiyob runs between Tashkent, Samarkand and Bukhara. The journey from the capital to Samarkand takes about two hours. Tickets for these routes are bought up in advance, especially in high season. From Samarkand to Bukhara the train takes about an hour and a half. Such a route allows you not to spend days on the road and to walk more. There are also regular trains between the cities, they are cheaper, but take longer. Tours in this destination are often built precisely along this line.

Khiva via Urgench: logistics and overnight stays

Khiva stands aside from the main railway line of Uzbekistan. The nearest large city and hub is Urgench, and that is where the train arrives. From Urgench to Khiva it is about half an hour by car or taxi. Many go to Khiva after Bukhara, and then return to Tashkent. In Khiva itself it is convenient to stay overnight inside the walls of Ichan-Kala. In the morning and evening there are few tourists here, the city belongs to you. One full day is calmly enough to see Khiva.

Walking tours of madrasahs, minarets and bazaars

The old cities of Uzbekistan are best seen on foot, without rushing. In Samarkand, the route around Registan and the mausoleums takes half a day. In Bukhara, madrasahs and minarets stand close together, the distances between them are short. In Khiva, the entire historical center can be covered in a couple of hours. Along the way there are chaikhanas where you can rest in the shade. During the day in Bukhara and Khiva the sun is strong, water is needed constantly. A walking holiday in Uzbekistan gives the strongest impression of the cities.

Gastronomy and everyday habits

Uzbek cuisine and local customs are half the impression of the trip. It is worth preparing for them in advance in order to feel at ease.

Pilaf, flatbreads, samsa and shurpa: what to try

Portions in Uzbekistan are hearty, so it is worth ordering a little at a time. Plov in Tashkent and Samarkand is prepared differently, it is worth comparing. Uzbek cuisine is built around meat, dough and vegetables. Fresh fruits and halva in the bazaars complement any lunch.

Tea breaks, markets and bargaining

Tea in Uzbekistan is drunk constantly and on any occasion. A chaikhana is a place of rest, not just a food spot. In the bazaars it is customary to bargain, but calmly and with a smile. This is part of local trade, not a conflict. The price for spices, fabrics and ceramics can quite well be brought down. Uzbek hospitality manifests itself precisely in such little things. A holiday in Uzbekistan without a bazaar will be incomplete.

Photos, etiquette and respect for local traditions

It is better to photograph people in Uzbekistan with their consent. In old quarters and at markets this is treated differently. In active mosques and mausoleums it is worth behaving quietly. Women here will find a headscarf and covered shoulders useful. Shoes are taken off at the entrance to holy places. Local traditions in Uzbekistan respect calm behavior and modesty. Uzbek culture is open to guests if the guest is polite.

Tour organization and support

Organizing a trip to Uzbekistan saves time and removes unnecessary hassle. Some issues are easier to resolve before departure than on the spot.

Souvenirs at the end of the route: ceramics, fabrics, spices

Souvenirs in Uzbekistan are more convenient to buy at the end of the route. That way you will not have to carry extra weight through the whole tour. Ceramics from Rishtan and Gijduvan are valued for their hand painting. Uzbek fabrics — atlas and adras — are sold in the bazaars of Bukhara and Khiva. Spices, halva and dried fruits take up little space in a suitcase. In Tashkent the choice is bigger, but prices are higher than in the provinces. Buy souvenirs where your holiday in Uzbekistan ends.

What to do before departure
