About the programme

This trip is an unhurried acquaintance with two great cities of Uzbekistan, where history is felt not in museum display cases, but right on the streets. The route is arranged so that you first find yourself in Samarkand, and then move on to Bukhara: two different characters, two different rhythms, one continuous line of the Silk Road.

Samarkand greets you with spaciousness and monumentality. Here everything is large and solemn: huge madrasahs, tombs, the cathedral mosque. The day of the city tour is the most packed of the whole trip, it requires attention and unhurried examination of details.

Bukhara is different. It is denser, cozier, with more life at eye level: trading domes, cafes around the pond, carved columns, narrow passages between madrasahs. Two days here give the opportunity both to walk around the center and to get out of town, to the summer residence of the emir and the memorial complex.

The five-day format with four nights suits those who want to see the main things without haste, but also without long journeys. Transfers, a guide, transport and water on the route are organized; entrance tickets, meals and the international flight are a separate matter.

Day-by-day itinerary

  1. Day 1

Arrival in Samarkand, meeting at the airport and accommodation in the hotel — then free time without excursions and transport. This is a day of adjustment: the city is so far only outside the window, and ahead are four nights in two ancient centers. Samarkand is one of the oldest cities in the world, the capital of Sogdiana and the empire of Tamerlane, and the very thought of this sets the tone of the trip.

  2. Day 2

The main impression of the day is Registan Square with three madrasahs and the Gur-Emir Mausoleum, the tomb of Tamerlane. Then — the Bibi-Khanym Cathedral Mosque, the Shah-i-Zinda ensemble and the Ulugh Beg Observatory Museum with a fragment of a giant sextant. This is the most packed day of the trip: much architecture, many details, and it is worth going without hurrying. Breakfast is included, night in the hotel.

  3. Day 3

The journey to Bukhara takes 300 kilometers and 4-5 hours — this is the only long stretch of the route, and it separates one city from the other. In Bukhara — a tour: the Lyabi-Hauz ensemble with an artificial pond, the Kukeldash Madrasah, the Nadir Divan-Begi Madrasah, the khanaka and the monument to Khoja Nasreddin. It is worth separately looking into the quarter of 16th-century covered bazaars with artisans' workshops. Night in the hotel.

  4. Day 4

The second Bukhara day leads both deep into history and out of town. The focus is the Samanid Mausoleum with its Sogdian and Islamic architecture, the Ark Fortress, the Poi-Kalyan complex and the Abdulaziz Khan Madrasah with rich ornaments. Then — the summer residence of the last Bukhara emir, the Sitorai Mokhi-Khosa Palace, and the Bahauddin Naqshband Memorial Complex. The pace is calmer than in Samarkand, but there are no fewer impressions. Night in the hotel.

  5. Day 5

Breakfast, transfer to the airport and the end of the program. The day is short: all that remains is to pack your things and say goodbye to Bukhara.
