About the programme

Seven days across three cities of Uzbekistan, between which you are carried by the high-speed train "Afrosiyob". It all begins in Tashkent, a capital with layered architecture: next to new buildings here stand monuments that are more than two thousand years old, and underground there is a metro that is worth seeing separately. Then the route goes to Samarkand and Bukhara, and this is already a completely different optics: not a modern city, but the Middle Ages, which has not gone anywhere.

The rhythm of the trip is calm, without haste. Each day is breakfast, one big walk or excursion, lunch or tasting and return to the hotel. The journeys between cities take part of the day, but do not eat it entirely: you manage both to look around in the new place and to rest.

Samarkand and Bukhara are two different ancient cities, and they feel different. Samarkand is closer to craft and production: here they show how carpets are woven by hand and paper is made, how a ceramic workshop works, how wine is made from the grapes of the Zarafshan valley. Bukhara is about the atmosphere of streets and squares: an artificial pond in the center of the city, madrasahs around it, covered bazaars and workshops where marionette dolls are made.

The trip will suit those who want to see the country without a race: walk a lot, try local food, talk with craftsmen and simply look. Free time on the first day and short pauses between journeys give the opportunity not to run out of steam by the end of the week.

You stay in hotels all the time, every day begins with breakfast, and between cities you are transported on transport with air conditioning. Lunch in the pilaf center "Besh Qozon", wine tasting at "Bagizagan" and tea drinking in the tea house are three points where food and drinks become part of the route, and not just a pause.

Day-by-day itinerary

  1. Day 1

Tashkent meets you at the airport, from where you are taken to the hotel. The day is free: you can rest from the road or simply go out for a walk. This is the only day without an excursion — further the rhythm will become denser.

  2. Day 2

The day in Tashkent begins with the Chorsu bazaar — under a huge dome they trade in spices, products and handicrafts. Nearby, in the Old City, mahallas with adobe houses and narrow streets are visible. Lunch takes place in the pilaf center "Besh Qozon", where they cook in giant cauldrons, and after that — an excursion around the modern part of the city: Independence Square and Amir Temur Square.

  3. Day 3

The journey to Samarkand takes part of the day. Here you find yourself in a city that was the capital of the empire of Tamerlane and remained the heart of caravan trade. The main impression of the day is the carpet factory "Khujum", where silk carpets are woven by hand: you can see how the cocoon of the mulberry silkworm is unwound and how the craftswomen work. The rest of the time is getting to know the city.

  4. Day 4

This day is entirely about craft and taste. First — the village of craftsmen "Konigil", where Samarkand silk paper is made and ceramicists work. Then — the winery "Bagizagan" in the valley of the Zarafshan river: a story about history, getting to know the processing of grapes and a tasting in the tasting hall. The pace of the day is unhurried, a lot of time passes in the workshops.

  5. Day 5

The road leads to Bukhara — a city through which the Great Silk Road also passed and where many architectural monuments have been preserved. The center of the day is Lyabi-Hauz square with an artificial pond, around which stand the Kukeldash madrasah, the Nadir Divan-Begi madrasah, a khanaka and a monument to Khoja Nasreddin. A separate stop is the marionette workshop on the same square: the craftsmen show how dolls are born and put on a small performance.

  6. Day 6

The morning begins with tea in the tea house "Spices of the Silk Road": tea with spices and Bukhara sweets, a conversation about why tea here opens and completes any meal. After that — the journey to Tashkent and accommodation in the hotel. The day is rather a travel day, but with a warm pause at the beginning.

  7. Day 7

The last breakfast, the journey to the airport of Tashkent and the end of the program. The day is short: only packing and the road.
