About the programme
In this trip, Uzbekistan reveals itself not from a grand facade, but gradually: first the desert and ancient Khorezm, then the caravan cities, then the capital and, finally, the mountains. Ten days are arranged as an unhurried movement from the southwest to the east, and each next city is unlike the previous one — both the rhythm and the very air around change.
The first half of the route is oases among the sand. Khiva, where the medieval shahristan has survived almost in its entirety, sets the tone: here one wants not to hurry, but to examine the details. The road through the Kyzylkum along the Amu Darya recalls the caravan routes, and Bukhara with its madrasahs, minaret and trading domes adds to this a sense of lived-in, living antiquity.
Further the route rises to Shahrisabz and Samarkand — cities connected with the name of Tamerlane. Here there is more architecture, more scale: squares, tombs, cathedral mosques. Then Tashkent — contrasting and multilayered, with a modern center and old mahallas, and one trip to the Chimgan mountains, where after all the cities one can simply breathe and look into the distance.
The trip will suit those who are ready to travel a lot and want to see different facets of the country at once: both the desert, and the medieval cities, and the mountains. The pace is uneven — days with long roads alternate with days of walks, and sightseeing days alternate with free time. The flight is not included in the price, and part of the entrance tickets and meals are paid separately — this is worth remembering in advance.
Day-by-day itinerary
Day 1
The first acquaintance with Uzbekistan begins in Urgench, from where the group goes to Khiva. This is a day without excursions: you are met at the airport and transported to the city, and then there remains free time without transport and a guide. The pace is the calmest of the entire trip. Khiva greets as one of the main cities of ancient Khorezm, where the medieval shahristan Ichan Kala has survived almost without changes.
Day 2
The first full sightseeing day takes place entirely inside Ichan Kala: wandering through its streets is like leafing through a book where every building has its own name and its own history. Among the stops are the Pahlavan Mahmud complex, the Kunya Ark fortress, the Islam Khodja madrasah and minaret, the Tash Hauli palace, the Allakuli Khan madrasah with the museum of the history of medicine, the Juma mosque with carved columns and the Muhammad Amin Khan madrasah. The day is packed, but one has to move around a little: everything is nearby.
Day 3
This is a day of the road: from Khiva to Bukhara the group travels through the Kyzylkum desert along the Amu Darya. Along the way there are several stops to walk over the dunes and see one of the largest rivers of the region. After checking into the hotel, free time remains — one can look into the souvenir shops and workshops. The pace is set by the road itself, not by the sights.
Day 4
Bukhara is a rare case when the ancient city does not have to be sought: it begins at once, as soon as you leave the hotel. On this day — the Samanid mausoleum, Chashma Ayub, the Bolo Hauz complex, the Ark fortress, the Poi Kalyan ensemble, the Abdulaziz Khan madrasah and the Ulugh Beg madrasah. Separately worth noting is the Lyabi Hauz square with a pond, cafes and a monument to Khoja Nasreddin, and also the covered trading domes, where craftsmen still work. The rhythm is unhurried, but one will have to walk a lot.
Day 5
The day begins with a transfer to Shahrisabz — a green city where, under Tamerlane and the Timurids, a second capital was built. Among the main impressions are the ruins of the Ak-Saray palace, the Dorut Tilavat memorial complex with Tamerlane's crypt, which remained empty, and the mausoleum of his son Jahangir, the Dorus Saodat ensemble and the Kok Gumbaz mosque. After the excursion — a transfer to Samarkand. The day is dynamic, with a large amount of what is seen.
Day 6
The day most saturated with architecture of the trip. Samarkand is a contemporary of Rome and the capital of Tamerlane's empire, and here one has to look broadly: the Registan square with three madrasahs, the Gur-Emir mausoleum, the Bibi-Khanym cathedral mosque, the Siab bazaar and the Shahi-Zinda ensemble. Each object is large, and between them time is needed to switch. By the end of the day the city begins to seem not a set of monuments, but a single whole.
Day 7
The morning continues the Samarkand line, but leads deeper: the Afrasiab history museum by the ruins of the ancient settlement and the Ulugh Beg observatory museum, where a fragment of a huge angle-measuring instrument that went into the ground has survived. After that — a transfer to Tashkent, a multifaceted capital with modern infrastructure and an old city. The day is mixed: half of it is about antiquity, half is about the road.
Day 8
Tashkent shows itself through contrasts: in the Old City — the Khast Imam square with the Barak Khan madrasah and the Kafal-al-Shashi Mazar mausoleum, the ancient Chorsu bazaar under a huge dome, adobe mahallas with narrow streets. Lunch takes place in the Central Asian pilaf center Besh Qozon, where pilaf is cooked every day in giant cauldrons. Then — a walk through the central part of the city. The day begins with the leisurely eastern part and ends with the modern one.
Day 9
A change of scenery: instead of cities — the Chimgan mountains, the spurs of the Western Tien Shan, 85 km from Tashkent. At the Amirsoy resort, a ride on a gondola-type cable car leads to an observation deck, from where the Chatkal range, the Charvak reservoir and the village of Brichmulla are visible. After that — a walking tour in the mountains, and on the way back lunch in the Bochki spot near the reservoir, where Uzbek kebabs are cooked. Then — return to Tashkent and free time.
Day 10
The last day is short: breakfast and a group transfer to the airport. The tour program ends, and then — departure home. The pace is calm, without excursions and transfers around the country.
