About the programme

Eight days across Uzbekistan is a route from Khiva to Tashkent, where each city reveals itself gradually and in its own way. The road leads from west to east: ancient Khiva with its inner city, Bukhara with its madrasahs and fortress, Samarkand with its squares and mausoleums, and finally the modern capital. The days here alternate between rich excursions and long drives, so the rhythm of the trip is unhurried but full.

The first two days are given to Khiva: the city meets you right from the airport, and then reveals itself entirely — from the citadel to the minaret, from which the whole city is visible. This is the very beginning of the journey, and here the tone is set for the entire trip: much architecture, little fuss.

The third and fourth days are Bukhara. First a long road leads here through the desert along the river, and then the city shows itself: mausoleums, madrasahs, the fortress and trading quarters. Here one especially feels that the city was a major center on the caravan route.

The fifth day connects the suburban sites of Bukhara and the drive to Samarkand, and the sixth belongs entirely to Samarkand — squares, mausoleums, mosques and the observatory. The seventh day is the drive to Tashkent and an introduction to the capital, where ancient monuments and modern streets stand side by side. The eighth day completes the program.

Who this trip is for: for those who want to see several cities of Uzbekistan at once and are not afraid of the road. The drives here are part of the route, not a pause between points: outside the window there is desert, river, cities. The excursions are group tours, with a guide, and free time leaves room for walks and bazaars.

Day-by-day itinerary

  1. Day 1

Arrival in Urgench and drive to Khiva — the beginning of the route. Meeting at the airport, check-in at the hotel and free time without excursions. Khiva is a city of ancient Khorezm, where the inner city of Ichan-Kala has been preserved.

  2. Day 2

The main impression of this day is Khiva itself, which is more than 2500 years old. A walk through Ichan-Kala goes from the Pakhlavan Mahmud complex to the Kunya-Ark fortress, then to the Islam Khodja minaret — the tallest in the city, from which a view of all the quarters opens. Further — the Tash Hauli palace, the Allakuli Khan madrasah with a museum of medicine, the Juma mosque with carved columns and the Muhammad Amin Khan madrasah. The pace of the day is calm but full.

  3. Day 3

A day of road: drive to Bukhara through the Kyzylkum desert along the Amu Darya. On the way — several stops, and the road itself recalls the caravan routes of the past. In Bukhara — check-in, free time and souvenir shops. This is the longest drive of the trip.

  4. Day 4

Bukhara reveals itself as a city of madrasahs and fortresses. The excursion begins with the Samanid mausoleum and Chashma Ayub, then — the Bolo-Khauz complex and the Ark fortress. The central part of the day is the Poi-Kalyan ensemble, the Abdulaziz Khan and Ulugh Beg madrasahs. It all ends at Lyabi-Khauz with a pond and the Kukeldash madrasah, as well as in the trading quarters of covered bazaars.

  5. Day 5

The morning is given to the suburban sites of Bukhara: the Sitorai Mokhi-Khosa palace and the Bahauddin Naqshband memorial complex. Then — the drive to Samarkand and check-in. Free time can be spent on Registan Square.

  6. Day 6

Samarkand is a city with more than 2750 years of history, and this day is entirely about it. The main thing is Registan Square with three madrasahs and the Gur-Emir mausoleum. Also in the program — the Bibi-Khanym mosque, the Shah-i-Zinda ensemble and the Ulugh Beg observatory museum with a fragment of a sextant.

  7. Day 7

Drive to Tashkent and an introduction to the capital. The excursion covers Khast-Imam Square with the Uthman Quran manuscript, the Barak Khan madrasah and the Kaffal-al-Shashi Mazar mausoleum. Then — Independence Square, Amir Timur Square and the Tashkent metro. The day combines ancient monuments and the modern city.

  8. Day 8

Breakfast and drive to Tashkent airport. The program ends.
