About the programme

This is a journey through western Uzbekistan — from ancient Khiva through the deserts of Karakalpakstan to the former bottom of the Aral Sea. Six days, five nights, two hotel bases: first Khiva, then Nukus, and Khiva again. The rhythm is uneven — calm city walks alternate with long drives through the desert, and this is the main character of the route.

The first part is Khiva. Ichan-Kala is surrounded by walls, and inside it life goes on unhurriedly: you walk along streets that look the same as many centuries ago, climb the Islam Khodja minaret, enter madrasahs and mosques. This is a day of unhurried, almost museum-like contemplation — architecture, shadow, clay, carved wood.

Then the route goes into Karakalpakstan. The desert here is not a backdrop but the main character. You drive from Khiva to Nukus, stopping at fortresses that are more than two thousand years old; one of them stands in the wind, another keeps traces of ancient writing. An overnight stay in Nukus, and the next day — a long road to Moynaq and Mizdahkan. This is the longest drive of the trip and the most powerful day in terms of impressions: the ship graveyard, the sea that has gone, the necropolis on three hills.

Then Nukus — an oasis city among deserts, with a museum that holds a collection of Russian avant-garde. After it — a return to Khiva, and the last morning — a short transfer to Urgench airport.

Who this trip is for: for those who are ready for long drives and want to see not only the ceremonial Uzbekistan but also its western, desert side. Nights in hotels, breakfasts included, two lunches according to the program, water on excursion days. The international flight is not included in the price.

Day-by-day itinerary

  1. Day 1

    Arrival in Urgench, meeting at the airport and a group transfer to Khiva. Then — free time without excursions and transport: you can simply look around, rest after the road or take a walk by the walls of Ichan-Kala. A day without haste, it sets a calm tone for the trip. Night in a hotel.

  2. Day 2

    The main impression of the day is Khiva itself inside the fortress walls. You climb the Islam Khodja minaret, from where the whole city is visible, enter the Kunya-Ark fortress, the Tash Hauli palace and the Juma mosque with its carved columns. The pace is measured, everything is nearby, lots of walking and looking at details. Night in a hotel.

  3. Day 3

    A day of desert and ancient fortresses. First Ayaz-Kala in the wind, then Toprak-Kala with its streets and temple of fire worshippers — here you feel that beneath your feet is a city that is almost two thousand years old. Lunch at Lake Akchakol, and after that — a drive to Nukus. A day of contrasts: from clay walls to water and on the road again. Night in a hotel.

  4. Day 4

    The longest and most powerful day of the trip. In Moynaq you climb an observation deck — the sea is not visible from there, it has gone far away; nearby is the ship graveyard with rusty hulls. Then Mizdahkan with its mausoleums of different eras and religions on three hills. The road takes many hours, but the impressions are worth it. Night in a hotel.

  5. Day 5

    Morning in Nukus — an oasis city among deserts. The main stop is the I. V. Savitsky Museum with a collection of Russian avant-garde, for which people come here from all over the world. After the museum — a drive to Khiva and check-in. The day is calmer than the previous one, with a long road and one big impression. Night in a hotel.

  6. Day 6

    Breakfast and a group transfer from Khiva to Urgench airport. The tour program ends here — only the last road and memories of the desert and ancient cities remain.
