About the programme

Eight days across Uzbekistan — from the capital to ancient Bukhara — are arranged as a leisurely reading of a big book: chapters replace each other, but each lives at its own rhythm. First Tashkent — a city where monuments of Zoroastrianism more than two thousand years old, masterpieces of the Middle Ages and the newest buildings stand side by side. Then Samarkand, a contemporary of Rome and the capital of Tamerlane's empire, where the day is filled with squares, mausoleums and craft courtyards. Further the route lies through Gijduvon — the ceramic capital — to Bukhara, one of the oldest cities in the world on the Great Silk Road. Here there are more than one hundred and forty preserved monuments, and the city centre is included in the UNESCO World Heritage List.

The rhythm of the trip changes: the days in Tashkent and Samarkand are dense excursions with lunches and dinners, where pilaf from giant cauldrons and kebabs on the coals of fruit trees are served at the table. Gijduvon adds a craft pause — the potter's wheel and the Narzullayevs' workshop. Bukhara takes two full days: first a square with an artificial pond and covered bazaars of the 16th century, then — a fortress, a minaret and a tea house with sweets. The penultimate day slows down: free time in Bukhara and a train ride back to Tashkent. The final day — the airport and departure home.

Meals on the tour are full board, and this is a separate pleasure: mashkhurda, khanum, manti, dimlama, kazan-kabob, shurpa balaza, dolma. Culinary master classes — on manti in Samarkand and on Bukhara pilaf "Oshi-Sofi" — give the opportunity not just to taste, but to see how it is done.

The trip is for those who want to see the country through its cities, cuisine and crafts, without hurrying and with air-conditioned transport. The flight is not included, entrance tickets to the monuments and insurance — either; but the programme includes economy-class railway tickets for the high-speed train "Sharq", a wine tasting, a tea ceremony and souvenirs.

Day-by-day itinerary

  1. Day 1

Day of arrival in Tashkent — without a sightseeing programme. Meeting at the airport, transfer to the hotel and free time. You can simply walk around the modern part of the city: the architecture of the capital impresses with its diversity — from ancient monuments to the newest buildings.

  2. Day 2

The main impression of the day is the Old City: Hast-Imam Square with the original of the Uthman Quran manuscript, the Barak-Khan Madrasah and the Kafal-al-Shashi Mazar Mausoleum. Here too — the Chorsu Bazaar under a huge dome and the old mahallas with adobe houses. Lunch at the "Besh Qozon" pilaf centre, where festive pilaf is cooked in cauldrons. The day ends with dinner with a tasting of mashkhurda and khanum.

  3. Day 3

Transfer to Samarkand by train and immediately — an introduction to the city. Registan Square with three madrasahs and the Gur-Emir Mausoleum set the tone for the whole day. Lunch with a tasting of Samarkand kebabs on the coals of fruit trees. Dinner in a national house with a master class on manti — this is no longer just food, but participation.

  4. Day 4

The day continues Samarkand: the Bibi-Khanym Cathedral Mosque, the Siab Bazaar, the Shah-i-Zinda ensemble of eleven mausoleums. A separate stop — the Ulugh Beg Observatory Museum with a fragment of a giant angle-measuring instrument and the "Afrasiab" History Museum. Lunch at the "Panjab" pilaf centre with Samarkand pilaf, then — the "Konigil" craftsmen's village with silk paper production and ceramic workshops. The day is completed by the "Bagizagan" winery with a tasting and dinner with dimlama.

  5. Day 5

Transfer to Bukhara through Gijduvon — a craft centre, where a master class on the potter's wheel takes place in the Narzullayevs' workshop. Lunch with a tasting of Gijduvon kebabs from local lamb. In Bukhara — the Lyabi-Hauz ensemble with an artificial pond, the Kukeldash and Nadir Divan-Begi Madrasahs, the monument to Khoja Nasreddin and the quarter of covered bazaars of the 16th century. Dinner with kazan-kabob.

  6. Day 6

The most packed day of Bukhara: the Samanid Mausoleum, Chashma Ayub, the Bolo-Hauz complex with carved columns, the Ark Fortress and the Poi-Kalyan ensemble with the Kalyan Minaret. Lunch in a chaikhana — shurpa balaza and dolma. Then the Abdulaziz-Khan and Ulugh Beg Madrasahs, tea drinking in the "Spices of the Silk Road" tea house and a master class on Bukhara pilaf "Oshi-Sofi" with dinner.

  7. Day 7

A day without excursions: free time in Bukhara, then transfer to Tashkent by train. This is a pause before the road home, when you can once again walk along familiar streets or simply rest.

  8. Day 8

Breakfast, transfer to the airport and departure home. The tour programme ends.
