About the programme

Uzbekistan in this route unfolds as a leisurely journey from Khiva to Samarkand: old cities here replace one another, and between them lies a road through the desert. The tone of the trip is set by the space itself — mud-brick walls, domes, narrow streets where history is read not in museums but right under your feet. The rhythm changes from day to day: after measured Khiva there will be a long drive, after rich Bukhara — the road to Samarkand, and at the end again a city, but of a completely different scale.

The journey rests on three points: Khiva, Bukhara and Samarkand. Each — with its own character. Khiva seems compact and almost toy-like, Bukhara — dense and crowded, Samarkand — spacious and majestic. Between them — landscapes that are also part of the impression: reddish sand, a river, caravan trails.

The tour will suit those who are ready for long drives in order to see the cities in their authentic form, without haste and fuss. Here there is a lot of walking, a lot of architecture and little obligatory schedule beyond the excursions. Free time is provided, and it can be spent on markets, workshops or simply on a walk.

It is important to remember: international flights, entrance tickets, meals and insurance are not included in the price — they should be planned separately. A night at the hotel awaits after each day, and breakfasts are already included.

Day-by-day itinerary

  1. Day 1

Meeting at the airport of Urgench and a group drive to Khiva — the first kilometers across the land of Khorezm. This is a day without excursions: free time to look around and rest from the road. Khiva itself is a city where a whole section of the medieval shahristan Ichan-Kala has been preserved, and from the first glance it is clear that there will be a lot of history ahead.

  2. Day 2

The main impression of the day is Khiva as a living city, and not a set of separate monuments. The excursion leads through Ichan-Kala: the Pakhlavan Mahmud complex, the Kunya-Ark fortress, the madrasah and minaret of Islam Khodja, from where the whole city is visible. Then — the Tash Hauli palace, a madrasah with a museum of medicine, the unusual Juma mosque with carved columns and the largest madrasah of Muhammad Amin-khan. The pace is calm, everything is nearby, and the day feels like a walk through the scenery of an eastern fairy tale.

  3. Day 3

A day of the road: from Khiva to Bukhara through the Kyzylkum desert along the Amu Darya. This is the same path along which the caravans of the Silk Road once walked, and the sand here really gives off red. Along the way — several stops to see the river. Then — accommodation in Bukhara, free time and an opportunity to look into souvenir shops and workshops.

  4. Day 4

Bukhara reveals itself as a labyrinth city: more than 140 monuments, medieval baths, a trading quarter. In the excursion — the Samanid mausoleum, the Chashma Ayub mausoleum, the Bolo-Khauz complex, the Ark fortress, the Poi-Kalyan ensemble with the Kalyan minaret, the madrasah of Abdulaziz-khan and Ulugbek. Then — Lyabi-Khauz square with a pond, the Kukeldash madrasah, the monument to Khoja Nasreddin and the covered bazaars of the 16th century. The day is dense, but everything is within the old city.

  5. Day 5

Morning — the suburban sites of Bukhara: the summer residence of the emir, the Sitorai Mokhi-Khosa palace, and the memorial complex of Baha-ud-Din Naqshband. After that — a drive to Samarkand, a city that has preserved the aura of the medieval Middle Ages. In the evening — free time, and it is worth walking around Registan square when it is illuminated.

  6. Day 6

Samarkand — the most intense day of the trip. Registan square with three madrasahs, the Gur-Emir mausoleum, the Bibi-Khanym cathedral mosque, the Shah-i-Zinda ensemble and the museum of the Ulugbek observatory with a fragment of the sextant. Here the scale of the Timurid empire is felt, and the day requires attention and time. This is the final chord before departure.

  7. Day 7

Breakfast and a drive to the airport of Samarkand. The tour program ends, but the feeling of a long journey through three great cities remains. The day is short and calm — only packing and the road.
