About the programme

Eight days between two countries that neighbor each other but sound different. The route leads from Tbilisi through Mtskheta and Kakheti to Borjomi or Kazbegi, and then to Yerevan, to Sevan and Geghard. This is a trip for those who are interested not only in looking but also in tasting: wine, bread from the oven, conversations at the table. The rhythm is uneven — after packed excursion days there is a calm transfer, and after a city walk — a whole day in the mountains. The group crosses the border between Georgia and Armenia by bus: the journey takes about five hours, and this is a separate sensation — the change of landscape, air and language. The nights are distributed between Tbilisi and Yerevan, so the suitcases can be unpacked thoroughly. Breakfasts are included, lunches are optional and at one's own expense, and wine tastings are available to guests from eighteen years old.

The main thing in this trip is the contrast of the two capitals and two ways of looking at the Caucasus. Tbilisi greets with the noise of Shardeni Street, sulfur baths and a view of the river from above; Yerevan — with the dry light of the Ararat Valley and the feeling that the mountains stand very close. Between them are village stops where bread is baked, and monasteries where people come for silence. Some go for history, some for wine and cuisine, but both are intertwined here.

One of the features of the route is the options. On the fourth day either Borjomi with the cave town of Uplistsikhe or Kazbegi with Ananuri and the Friendship Arch is confirmed: the choice depends on availability, not on the guest's wish. On the sixth day one of two programs is also offered — either Sevan with Dilijan and Haghartsin, or Garni with Geghard and a lavash master class. Both versions are about mountains and ancient stones, but the day takes shape differently: in one there is more water and forest, in the other — cliffs and pagan architecture.

The weather in the mountains can interfere with plans: under certain conditions Borjomi is replaced by Gori and the Chronicle of Georgia memorial, and the passage to the Symphony of Stones is sometimes impossible. Jeeps to the Gergeti church are paid on the spot, as are lunches in Mtskheta and Mleta. The flight is not included in the tour price — it is bought separately, and the transfer from the airport and back is organized for one flight per request.

This trip will suit those who are ready for long journeys and early rises, who love to try and are not afraid to change country in the middle of the route. It is not about the beach and not about haste — rather about feeling in eight days how two neighboring peoples are similar and how they differ.

Day-by-day itinerary

  1. Day 1

The first day is only arrival and check-in. The transfer from the airport takes about half an hour, depending on traffic. Rooms are ready after 15:00, and until that time the day remains free: you can walk around the city or rest after the road. Meals are not included on this day.

  2. Day 2

The most packed day of the trip: Tbilisi and its surroundings in one outing. First, the ascent to the Jvari Monastery on the mountain, from where you can see how two rivers merge, and in clear weather — Kazbek. Then Mtskheta with Svetitskhoveli Cathedral, where inside there is semi-darkness and the flickering of candles, and lunch in one of the restaurants — at one's own expense. In the afternoon, return to Tbilisi: Tsminda Sameba Cathedral, the Rezo Gabriadze Theater with the crooked tower, Anchiskhati Church, the Bridge of Peace, Shardeni Street and the Abanotubani sulfur baths with the Fig Waterfall nearby. The pace is high, there are many impressions — by the end of the day it becomes clear why the city is called the warm heart of the Caucasus.

  3. Day 3

The day of Kakheti is about air, grapes and bread. First, Bodbe Monastery, where the relics of Saint Nino rest, — a quiet and bright place. Then Sighnaghi with white-stone streets and a view of the Alazani Valley; here too they recall the story of the artist Niko Pirosmani and his million scarlet roses. In the village of Badiauri they show how shotis puri is baked in the tone oven, and let you try hot bread straight from there. The day ends with a tasting of Kakhetian wine — for guests over eighteen years old. The road back to Tbilisi, and with you — a light wine warmth.

  4. Day 4

The fourth day is a fork: one of two excursions is confirmed, without a choice. If it is Borjomi, then the day passes in a resort town with pine air and mineral water from the spring, and after lunch — the cave town of Uplistsikhe, carved into the rock. If the weather changes plans, Borjomi is replaced by Gori with the Stalin Museum and the Chronicle of Georgia memorial by the Tbilisi Sea. If it is Kazbegi, then the road goes through Ananuri Fortress by the Zhinvali Reservoir, the Friendship Arch in Gudauri and the village of Mleta, where you can have lunch at your own expense. In good weather — an ascent by jeeps to the Gergeti church at the foot of Kazbek, payment for the jeeps on the spot. Both versions are about mountains, but one is about water and caves, the other about altitude and wind.

  5. Day 5

The day of transfer to Yerevan. After breakfast the group checks out of the rooms and sets off — the journey takes about five hours, plus time at the border, which usually passes quickly. On arrival the transfer takes you to the hotel, the car is changed. You can walk around the city on your own. Night in Yerevan, meals — only breakfast.

  6. Day 6

This day also has an option: either Sevan with Dilijan and Haghartsin, or Garni with Geghard. In the first case — a walk along the old street of Dilijan, Haghartsin Monastery among the forest with khachkars and a stone with a hole for a wish, a tasting at the Ijevan Wine and Brandy Factory and Lake Sevan with azure water; also in the program are Goshavank with the Cathedral of Holy Astvatsatsin and the khachkar of Poghos. In the second case — a stop at the Charents Arch with a view of Ararat, the pagan temple of Garni, the Symphony of Stones in the gorge and Geghard Monastery, partially carved into the rock, and the day ends with a master class on lavash or sweet gata. Both versions are long and packed, but one is about water and forest, the other about stone and fire.

  7. Day 7

The day begins with Khor Virap — a monastery on a hill in the middle of the Ararat Valley, where they descend into the pit in which Gregory the Illuminator was kept for many years. The view of Ararat from here is especially wide and clear. Then the road into the Arpa River gorge to Noravank: red-orange cliffs, the Church of Saint Karapet, the two-story Church of Surp Astvatsatsin with a narrow staircase and the carving of the master Momik. The finale of the day is a wine tasting at the In Areni factory in the village of Areni, for guests over eighteen years old. Night in Yerevan.

  8. Day 8

The last day — breakfast, check-out by 12:00 and transfer to Yerevan airport. Farewell to Armenia and departure home.
