Tbilisi, Kakheti, Mtskheta and Gori: 4-day sightseeing tour

Tbilisi, Kakheti, Mtskheta and Gori: 4-day sightseeing tour

Days: 4Flight included

About the programme

Four days in Georgia are not a gallop through the sights, but a measured immersion in a country where wine is made in qvevri, and city walls remember invasions. You live in Tbilisi, from where you travel to Kakheti, Mtskheta and Racha, and each day is unlike the previous one: one is about city balconies and temples of different confessions, another is about vineyards and family cellars, the third is about ancient stones and caves.

Tbilisi greets you in layers: a fortress wall on Pushkin Street, carved balconies-aivani, the Bridge of Peace and a cable car to the fortress. Here under one roof coexist the Orthodox Anchiskhati Church, a synagogue, a mosque — a city that survived devastation and revived again. And then you descend into a wine cellar, where you taste living wines and learn to pronounce toasts the way they do at a Georgian table.

Kakheti is the Alazani Valley, Sighnaghi with fortress walls and Bodbe Monastery. The road goes through vineyards, and the day ends with dinner in a family that makes homemade Kindzmarauli: you are seated at the table, shown the cellar and poured Tsinandali, Saperavi, Rkatsiteli and chacha.

Mtskheta is the ancient capital and the place where Saint Nino brought the good news. You ascend to Jvari Church, enter Svetitskhoveli Cathedral, and then go to the cave city of Uplistsikhe and to Gori, the birthplace of Stalin. Further — Racha: quiet Ambrolauri, a tasting at the Royal Khvanchkara winery and mountain landscapes with virgin forests.

The rhythm of the trip is this: active sightseeing days alternate with transfers and free time in Tbilisi. The flight is included in the program, as are transfers, accommodation, meals according to the program and five wine tastings with snacks.

Day-by-day itinerary

  1. Day 1

You arrive in Tbilisi, you are met at the airport and taken to the hotel. Then — check-in and rest after the journey. This is a technical day to gather strength before the excursions.

  2. Day 2

The most urban day of the trip. You walk around Old and New Tbilisi: the fortress wall along Pushkin Street, carved balconies, the Bridge of Peace, the cable car to the fortress and the Holy Trinity Cathedral-Sameba. The main impression is the city as a layered pie of cultures: in one day you visit Anchiskhati, Saint Gevork Church, a synagogue, Juma Mosque and Sioni Cathedral. The day ends with a wine tasting in a 17th-century cellar, where you taste living wines, listen to toasts and take photos by the Tamada monument.

  3. Day 3

A day in Kakheti, and it is about wine and fortresses. First Bodbe Monastery, where you can touch the relics of Saint Nino, then Sighnaghi — the city of lovers with fortress walls and a view of the Alazani Valley. After — the Kindzmarauli wine factory, where you taste different varieties, and in the evening dinner in a family that makes homemade wine: a table, a cellar and a small tasting with chacha await you. The pace is measured, but rich in impressions.

  4. Day 4

This day is about antiquity and shrines. You go to Mtskheta, ascend to Jvari Church and enter Svetitskhoveli Cathedral. Then a tasting at Chateau Mukhrani and Mukhrani Fortress. Further — the cave city of Uplistsikhe with its thousand-year-old structures and Gori, where you visit the Stalin Museum and the house in which he was born. For tours of 4 nights — return to Tbilisi, for longer ones — transfer to Racha.

  5. Day 5

Racha greets you with silence and mountains. In Ambrolauri you have lunch and taste at the Royal Khvanchkara winery: Aleksandrouli, Mujuretuli, Khvanchkara and chacha. The main thing here is nature: virgin forests on the slopes of the Caucasus Range, mountain streams and passes. Along the way — Nikortsminda Cathedral with frescoes of the 16th–17th centuries, Shaori Lake and the Tskhradjvari shrine. The day is calm, without haste.

  6. Day 6

Transfer from Ambrolauri to Tbilisi. You return to the city, check into the hotel, and you have free time left — you can walk along familiar streets or simply rest. This is the day before departure, without excursions.

  7. Day 7

Breakfast at the hotel, then transfer to the airport. The program ends, but you take with you the taste of Georgian wine and the feeling of a layered pie of cultures that Tbilisi turned out to be.
