Tours to Azerbaijan: what to know

New Year in Azerbaijan is a short official holiday on December 31 and January 1–2, which in practice stretches to January 4–6. From Almaty, a direct flight to Baku takes about three hours, land borders are closed, so the route is built only through the capital's airport. In winter, Baku is +4…+9 °C and windy, in the mountains of Gabala up to −10 °C and there is snow.

When to go and how to get there from Almaty?

A holiday trip to Azerbaijan begins with the calendar and the route. The winter season here is short, and you can only enter the country by air, so dates and flights are best coordinated in advance.

Holiday dates and duration of the holidays

New Year in Azerbaijan is most convenient to celebrate if you arrive on December 29–30: that way you will catch both the capital's fairs and the ski slopes. The official days off in Azerbaijan for New Year cover December 31 and January 1–2. In practice, local holidays are often stretched to January 4–6, and the festive program in Baku lasts approximately until the middle of the first week of the month. For a tourist from Almaty, this is a convenient window: five to six days is enough for both the capital and a trip to the mountains. The peak hotel occupancy falls on December 30 — January 2, so it is better to arrive on December 29–30 or, conversely, after January 3. The second half of the holidays is quieter and cheaper, while the Christmas trees and fairs in the capital are still operating. It is worth planning the trip with a margin in dates: return flights on January 1–2 are booked up first.

Flight, visa and closed land borders

A direct flight from Almaty to Baku takes about three hours, operated by AZAL and other carriers. In winter, delays are possible due to strong wind in the Azerbaijani capital, so connections within the trip should not be made too short. Azerbaijan's land borders are closed to tourists, so the route is built only through Baku airport. This means that the return ticket is also taken from the capital, and not through Russia or Georgia. In winter, flights fill up quickly, and booking them two to three months before New Year is common practice.

Weather and choice of destination

Winter Azerbaijan splits into two different trips. One is the damp and windy capital, the second is snowy mountains with frosty nights. The choice of destination determines both your wardrobe and your budget.

The capital and the seaside winter

In December and January, Baku stays between +4 and +9 °C, often windy and damp. Snow falls rarely and melts quickly, but the dank wind from the Caspian feels stronger than the thermometer shows. For walks along the embankment and the old city, you need a warm jacket, a hat and waterproof shoes. The seaside winter in Azerbaijan is mild, but there are few sunny days, so outdoor plans should be duplicated with indoor ones: museums, teahouses, shopping centers. In the evening the temperature drops to +2…+4 °C, and without gloves it is uncomfortable in the square by the Christmas tree. Three to four days are enough for trips around the capital; after that it makes sense to leave for the regions.

Mountains and health resorts

In the Gabala district, at night it can be down to −10 °C, and stable snow cover lies from mid-December. The resorts of Shahdag and Gabala at this time operate as ski resorts, and there is enough snow there for the slopes. The health resort of Naftalan in winter receives guests more calmly than in summer, and prices for procedures are lower. Sheki in December is a quiet city with a short daylight hours, and excursions there are best booked in advance. The road to the mountains takes time, so at least three to four days should be allotted for the region. Night frosts require serious insulation, especially if you are traveling with children.

What to consider when booking

Holiday Azerbaijan is booked in advance, and this is the main rule of the season. Hotels become more expensive, transfers are packed, and winter roads require a margin of time.

Where to stay on New Year's dates?

Hotels in Baku and Gabala for December 31 and the first days of January fill up one to two months in advance. Prices during the holidays are about 1.5–2 times higher than usual, and closer to the date the only options left are expensive ones. It is worth booking with free cancellation: plans in winter often shift due to weather and flights. In the capital, it is more convenient to stay in the center in order to walk to the Christmas trees and fairs. At mountain resorts, accommodation is tied to the ski lifts, and this is more important than the view from the window.

Transfers and roads in winter

From Baku airport to the center, people travel by taxi or Aero Express bus. The road to Gabala takes three to three and a half hours by car; in winter the serpentine road is cleared, but a margin of time is needed. During the holidays, the highways can be busy, and in the mountains restrictions due to snow are possible. It is better to order a transfer in advance, especially for January 1–2, when demand is at its peak. Daylight hours in winter are short, so trips to Sheki and Naftalan are planned for the morning.

Budget and trip preparation

Money and communication solve half of the winter questions. In Azerbaijani regions, cards are not accepted everywhere, and it is better to think through currency exchange before departure.

Money, cards and exchange

The national currency of Azerbaijan is the manat, and cash is needed in the regions and at mountain resorts. Cards are accepted in Baku hotels and large complexes, but in small teahouses and at markets they count only on cash. ATMs in the capital and Gabala exchange tenge poorly, and the rate is unfavorable. It is more profitable to bring dollars or euros and exchange them at banks and exchange offices in Baku. At a ski resort there may be only one ATM, so a supply of cash is taken along. Small bills will come in handy for taxis and tips.

Communication, insurance and first aid kit

Local SIM cards Azercell and Bakcell are issued against an identity document. Roaming of Kazakh operators works reliably in winter, and for a short trip it is often enough. An insurance policy with coverage for active recreation will be useful on ski slopes. In Gabala there are medical stations at the resorts, but in remote villages it is harder to find help. In winter, the first aid kit should include an antipyretic, cold remedies and a painkiller. Warm insoles and spare gloves should also be put in the suitcase.

How to spend a holiday with children and the festive program?

With children, winter Azerbaijan is built around indoor entertainment and festive venues. Outdoor activities depend on the weather, so the plan needs to be flexible.

New Year trees, fairs and skating rinks

In Baku, New Year trees are set up in squares and parks, concerts and fairs are organized. The festive program in the Azerbaijani capital runs almost every evening, admission is more often free. In Gabala there is a skating rink and a New Year program at the resort, as well as sledding. In winter in Baku there are few outdoor activities for children, but hotels and shopping centers have indoor parks and pools. With small children it is more convenient to alternate a walk and a warm room. Evening concerts in the square are noisy, and with small children it is better to come earlier.

Cuisine, dress code and opening hours of establishments

In Baku in winter, teahouses and restaurants with pilaf, dolma and kutabs operate. In Gabala and Sheki local cuisine is served, but some establishments are closed on January 1. Tables on festive evenings are better booked in advance, otherwise only late slots will remain. Tourists in Azerbaijan are treated calmly, but in mosques and rural areas modest clothing is appropriate. It is better to cover shoulders and knees, especially for women. Hot tea with jam after a frosty walk is an obligatory part of a winter day.
