Tours to Svaneti: what to know

Holidays in Svaneti — a high-mountain region in northwestern Georgia with towers, glaciers and villages such as Mestia and Ushguli. The season is short: from mid-June to early October, with the peak in July and August. From Almaty, flights go with a transfer through Istanbul or Dubai, and the journey takes at least a day. Allow 5–7 days for the trip.

What to consider before travelling to the high-mountain region

Svaneti lies in northwestern Georgia, right by the border with Russia. Here there are high ridges, towers and villages reached with transfers.

The journey from Almaty: transfers and extra time

There are no direct flights from Almaty to Georgia; you will have to fly with a transfer through Istanbul or Dubai. The journey one way takes at least a day including the connection. From Tbilisi to Mestia there are night trains and minibuses, and in winter the pass is sometimes closed. Holidays in Svaneti should be planned with a buffer of one or two days on each side. Then a flight delay or snowfall will not ruin the whole route. It is also better not to schedule the return flight too close to the return from the mountains. Such a buffer saves nerves and money.

When to go: seasons in the mountains

The high-mountain season in Svaneti is short, and the weather here decides more than the calendar. Mid-June to early October is the time when all trails and passes are open. July and August are the warmest, but also the busiest. Late September pleases with clear views and fewer guests. In winter the Hatsvali resort operates, but some villages are cut off by snow. In spring it is damp, roads are washed out, and many houses are closed. Plan tours to Svaneti for your season, not at random.

How to prepare for holidays in Svaneti

Money, communications and medicines in the mountains work differently than in Tbilisi. This is worth thinking about before departure, not on the spot.

Cash lari and the lack of ATMs

Cash lari is the basis of any holiday in Svaneti; cards are accepted far from everywhere. In Mestia there are few ATMs, and in remote villages there are none at all. It is better to withdraw money in Tbilisi or Zugdidi, on the way to the mountains. Guesthouses, jeeps and small cafes more often work only for cash. Take a reserve with you, but do not keep everything in one place. Small notes will be useful for tea, taxis and souvenirs. In the highlands there is sometimes nowhere to change a large sum.

Communications, internet and work at altitude

Mobile communications in the gorges are unstable, and in high-mountain villages the signal is picked up only by some operators. Holidays in Svaneti rarely combine with full-fledged remote work. There is internet in guesthouses, but the speed drops in the evening when everyone is online. Download maps, tickets and bookings in advance while you are in the city. Local residents speak Svan, Russian and Georgian are understood in tourist places, English — less often. If work requires calls, plan them for the morning. Otherwise you will have to look for a spot with signal all over the village.

Where to stay in Mestia and Ushguli?

Accommodation in Svaneti means guesthouses, guesthouses and small hotels. The choice depends on how much time you are ready to spend on the road.

Guesthouses and family hospitality

Guesthouses in Svaneti are run by families, and this is the main format of overnight stay in the region. Hosts cook home food, not restaurant dishes from a menu. Breakfast and dinner are usually included or cost extra, check when booking. The rooms are simple: a bed, a stove or heater, a shared bathroom. Such hospitality gives more than a hotel: route advice and local stories. In Ushguli the choice of houses is smaller than in Mestia, and they are more modest. But the mountain views from the window open right from the bed.

Booking accommodation in high season

In high season, places in Mestia and Ushguli are taken in advance, sometimes months ahead. In summer and early autumn the largest number of tourists arrives. Book holidays in Svaneti before buying tickets, otherwise the only choice left will be from distant villages. In the shoulder season prices are lower, but some houses are closed for repairs. In winter the Hatsvali ski resort operates, and demand rises again. Cancelling a booking at the last moment in the mountains is especially inconvenient.

How the local cuisine and community life differ

Cuisine and customs in Svaneti differ from the rest of Georgia. This is noticeable already in the first village along the way.

Svan dishes and salt

Svan cuisine differs from the rest of Georgian, and this is felt immediately. Kubdari is a flatbread with meat and spices, baked in every home. Chvishtari are corn flatbreads with cheese inside, filling and inexpensive. Local Svan salt is a mixture with spices, added to almost everything. Try it at home, and then buy a bag as a gift. The portions are large, so order one dish for two. Georgian cuisine in the lowlands is different, but here it sounds in its own way.

Rules of behaviour in mountain villages

In the mountain villages of Svaneti, their own rules of behaviour in the community apply. Photographing people and houses should only be done with the permission of the hosts. Entering temples and courtyards without an invitation is not customary. Dress modestly, especially near churches and towers. Take your rubbish with you: there is nowhere to take it out in the mountains. Greeting people when you meet is the norm, even with strangers. Respect for local customs makes holidays in Svaneti calm for both sides.

What to do with acclimatisation and health problems?

Altitude, the road and limited medicine are the main risks of the trip. It is easier to prepare for them than to solve problems on the spot.

Altitude, shortness of breath and the first days of the route

A sharp ascent to an altitude of 2000 meters and above can cause headaches and shortness of breath. It is better to start your rest here from Mestia, and not immediately from remote villages. In the first days, do not overload the route, walk around the surroundings and drink more water. Leave the ascent to the glacier or to Ushguli for the third or fourth day. If your head hurts severely and does not go away, descend lower. Alcohol in the first days intensifies symptoms, it is better to abstain. Listen to your body, not the group's schedule.

First aid kit, insurance and water from springs

Medical care in the highlands is limited: serious cases are taken to Zugdidi or Tbilisi. A first aid kit and insurance are mandatory for any holiday in Svaneti. Take painkillers, remedies for diarrhea, bandages and your regular medications. There are no large pharmacies in Svaneti, it is better to bring what you need from Tbilisi or Zugdidi. Water from open springs and waterfalls should not be drunk without boiling or a filter. Springs in villages are usually cleaner, but the risk remains. Insurance must cover the mountains and evacuation, check this at home.

Briefly

  • A holiday in Svaneti begins with Mestia, then Ushguli and the glaciers follow.
  • Fly from Almaty with a transfer, allow a day for the journey one way.
  • Take cash in lari: there are almost no ATMs or card terminals in the mountains.
  • Book guesthouses in advance; in season, places are taken quickly.
  • Communication and the internet are unstable, download maps and bookings in advance.
