Tours to Maldives: what to know

Nauryz in the Maldives is an ordinary working day: there are no public holidays or official ceremonies here on March 21. The festive atmosphere is created by the tourists from Kazakhstan themselves, most often inside the hotel. The dates of March 21–23 coincide with high season, so book the hotel and transfer in advance. The flight from Almaty is routed through Dubai, Doha, or Colombo and takes from ten hours.

How it is celebrated and what to expect

The Maldives live by their own calendar, and the spring equinox is not marked in red here. A tourist from Almaty who arrives at the end of March lands in the ordinary working days of local residents.

Official status of March 21 in the Maldivian calendar

March twenty-first in the Maldives is an ordinary working day; there are no public holidays or official ceremonies. Nauryz in the Maldives is not included in the list of local holidays, because the country practices Islam and observes a different set of dates. Hotels, guesthouses, boats, and shops in Male operate on their usual schedule. A tourist expecting street festivities, fireworks, or national games will not find them. The festive atmosphere on this day is created only by the guests themselves who have come from Kazakhstan. For the local population, the date passes unnoticed if there is no Kazakhstani company nearby.

Kazakhstani diaspora and tourists: where to look for the festive atmosphere

Communities of people from Kazakhstan on the archipelago are few and concentrated mainly in Male and at the resorts. Nauryz in the Maldives is most often celebrated inside the hotel: tourists gather as a group, order dinner, and spend the evening together. At the resorts of Ari Atoll and Baa Atoll, the staff are ready to help organize such an evening if asked in advance. On the local islands, there are no festive events at all. A tourist counting on a big celebration with music and dancing will be disappointed. The easiest way to spend the date is in the circle of your family or travel companions, rather than searching for someone else's holiday.

What to consider when choosing travel dates for the holidays?

The Kazakhstani days off on March 21–23 coincide with the peak tourist season on the archipelago. This is the main factor that determines both the price and the choice of hotel.

High season and the cost of hotels in mid-March

Mid-March is the height of high season, and accommodation prices during this period are noticeably higher than in May or November. Resorts in the Maldives are booked several months in advance, and there are almost no free villas left for the holiday dates. Guesthouses on the local islands are snapped up even faster, because supply there is limited. A tourist from Almaty should compare options in advance, rather than look for accommodation a couple of weeks before departure. The difference in price between March and low season pays for moving the trip to May. If the dates are tied to the holiday, be prepared to pay at the upper limit.

Type of accommodationHigh season (March)Low season (May)What is included
ResortMaximum priceNoticeably cheaperMeals, transfer, entertainment
Guesthouse on a local islandAbove averageMinimum priceBreakfast, the daily life of the islanders
Guesthouse in MaleAverageBelow averageOvernight stay before the transfer

Dry season: weather, sea, and visibility for snorkeling

The end of the dry season gives the tourist almost ideal conditions for the water. There is little rain, the sea is calm, and underwater visibility reaches tens of meters. Snorkeling and diving operate at full capacity during this period, and the reefs show their maximum. The air temperature stays around thirty degrees, and the water is warmed to twenty-eight. The sun is very active, so high-SPF cream is needed even on a cloudy day. The only downside is the price and the crowded resorts. For underwater impressions, the dates are excellent; for saving money, they are not.

How to get there from Almaty and arrange entry

The journey from Kazakhstan to the archipelago takes almost a day and requires at least one connection. Logistics should be thought through before buying the tour.

Routes with connections through Dubai, Doha, and Colombo

There are no direct flights from Almaty to the Maldives, and the journey is always routed through a major hub. It is most convenient to fly through Dubai or Doha: there are short layovers and frequent flights there. Through Colombo the route is longer, but sometimes cheaper. The total travel time with a connection takes from ten to sixteen hours. A nighttime layover is convenient because it allows you to sleep on the way. Having arrived in Male, the tourist immediately enters a tropical climate and must be ready for the heat. Choose a flight so as to arrive during the day: then the transfer to the island will go without haste.

Visa on arrival, passport, and booking confirmation

Citizens of Kazakhstan do not need to arrange a visa in advance for a tourist trip. On arrival at Male airport, a free thirty-day stamp is placed. However, everyone goes through document checks at the border, and it is better to have the papers at hand. The passport must be valid for at least six months from the date of travel. A return ticket and confirmation of hotel booking are required. Without them, the tourist may be turned back already at the airport, and the trip will end before it begins. Copies of documents should be saved on the phone and in print.

Where to stay: resorts, guesthouses, and local islands

The choice of accommodation on the archipelago determines not only the budget, but also how the entire vacation will go. The difference between a resort and a local island is huge.

The difference in prices and rules between resorts and inhabited islands

A resort is a separate island with villas, restaurants, and complete freedom in clothing. A guesthouse on inhabited islands costs several times less and shows the daily life of Maldivians from the inside. Strict norms apply on the local islands: swimsuits are appropriate only on specially designated beaches. Outside them, one must wear closed clothing covering the shoulders and knees. Alcohol is not sold at all on such islands, while at resorts it is freely available. Maldivian cuisine is built on tuna, coconut, rice, and spicy curry, and on the local islands it can be tried in its authentic form. A tourist choosing a guesthouse gets savings and culture, but loses the usual comfort.

Transfers between atolls: boats, dhoni and seaplanes

You can get from Male airport to the resort in three ways, and each has its own limitations. A speedboat is suitable for nearby atolls and takes from forty minutes to two hours. The local dhoni ferry is cheaper, but runs on a schedule and only during the day. A seaplane delivers to distant atolls like Baa Atoll, but flies exclusively during daylight hours. You should not plan a connection with a night flight: you will have to spend the night in Male. The transfer is booked in advance together with the hotel, otherwise there may be no available seats on the spot. Maldivian logistics does not tolerate improvisation.

How to prepare for the trip and celebrate the holiday?

Packing for the archipelago differs from an ordinary beach holidays. Small details here matter more than anywhere else.

Money, communications, insurance and medical nuances

The Maldivian rufiyaa is in circulation, but it is more convenient to pay with US dollars almost everywhere. They are accepted at resorts, in guesthouses and at Male airport. ATMs are found in the capital and on large islands, while on remote atolls it is better to have cash with you. A local SIM card is bought at Male airport; communications at resorts are usually good, on local islands weaker. Medical insurance with coverage for activities is a reasonable precaution. Medicine on the islands is expensive, and helicopter evacuation costs a lot. The time difference with Kazakhstan is almost unnoticeable, acclimatization is easy.

Festive dinner on request and local etiquette

For a festive dinner in honor of Nauryz, it is worth notifying the hotel in advance. At resorts, they can organize an individual table or a themed evening on request. On local islands, dinner is prepared more modestly, but with home cooking. Local etiquette requires respect for traditions: you should not photograph people without permission. During the holy period for Muslims, people eat and drink more restrainedly on the streets. The Maldivian host side is friendly, but expects politeness in return. A holiday in the tropics will be warm if you take these little things into account in advance.
