Tours to Cyprus: what to know
Beach holidays in Cyprus are a season from May to October, when the sea warms up to comfortable temperatures and the air stays around 28–32 degrees. From Almaty, people fly to the island with a connection through Istanbul or Dubai, and the journey takes from seven to twelve hours. The main resorts are Ayia Napa, Protaras, Limassol, Paphos and Larnaca. The peak season is July and August, and the velvet season is September and October.
Visa and documents: what is prepared in advance?
A trip to the island begins with paperwork, and haste hurts here. Cyprus is not part of Schengen, so beach holidays in Cyprus require separate preparation.
What documents are needed for citizens of Kazakhstan
For a trip to the island, a valid passport is needed, with an expiry date no earlier than several months after the end of the holiday. The Cypriot side usually asks for confirmation of accommodation booking and return tickets. Without these papers, beach holidays may not happen already at the border. The exact list should be checked in advance, because the rules change.
How to get a Cypriot visa and how long it takes
The national Cypriot visa is issued in advance, not at the airport. The package of papers is submitted to the consulate, and the review period takes from several days to a couple of weeks. In summer the queue is longer, so holidays are better planned a month to a month and a half ahead. The Cypriot visa is usually single-entry or double-entry, and this should be clarified when applying. If traveling through Istanbul or Dubai, a transit permit may also be needed. A trip to the island without a ready visa turns into a lottery, so the papers are collected first.
The road from Almaty: flights, connections and transfers — how to get there?
From Almaty, people get to the island with a transfer, and the journey takes almost a day. There may be no direct flights in the schedule, so the route is built in advance.
Which routes lead to the island and how long the journey lasts
Most often people fly through Istanbul, Dubai or Abu Dhabi. The total travel time including the connection is from seven to twelve hours. The Cypriot side receives flights in Larnaca and Paphos, less often in Nicosia. A connection in Istanbul is usually shorter, but requires a buffer for the transfer. In winter the schedule thins out, and waiting for the next flight takes longer. The time difference with Almaty is 3 hours in winter and 2 hours in summer: Cyprus changes its clocks (UTC+2 in winter, UTC+3 in summer), while Kazakhstan stays on UTC+5 all year round. Beach holidays begin not on the plane, but after proper sleep.
How to get from the airport to the resort
From Larnaca to Ayia Napa or Protaras it takes about an hour. To Limassol it is about the same, to Paphos it is noticeably farther. A transfer is ordered in advance, otherwise on the spot you will have to look for a taxi at an inflated price. Buses between the airport and the resorts do run, but rarely and not always conveniently. Renting a car at the airport saves you from waiting. Cypriot roads are good, but left-hand traffic requires getting used to.
Money, communications and medical insurance
Finances and health on the island are expensive if you do not prepare. Beach holidays are calmer when money and the policy are sorted out in advance.
Cash, cards and currency exchange
The currency of the island is the euro, not the tenge and not the dollar. Cards of Kazakhstani banks may not work abroad, so part of the money is brought in cash. ATMs at the resorts exist, but the withdrawal fee and conversion rate are usually unfavorable. Exchange is better planned in advance, while still in Almaty. In Ayia Napa and Limassol there are more exchange offices than in Protaras. The Cypriot side accepts cards in hotels and large restaurants, but in small taverns — not always.
Insurance policy and access to medicine
Medical insurance for the trip is mandatory, and treatment on the island is expensive. A policy with hospitalization coverage should be taken even for a short period. Cypriot medicine is high-quality, but the bill for a visit may surprise you. Pharmacies exist in every resort town, but round-the-clock ones — not everywhere. Chronic medications are better brought with you. Beach holidays with a policy are calmer than without it.
Transport on the island and car rental
The island is small, but without a car it becomes inconvenient. Beach holidays in Ayia Napa and Protaras are easy to manage on foot, but trips between cities require wheels.
Public transport between cities
Buses between resorts run rarely, sometimes once an hour or less. Getting from Larnaca to Paphos or Protaras by public transport is inconvenient. The schedule changes by season; in winter there are fewer flights. Tickets are bought from the driver; cards are not accepted everywhere. The Cypriot side relies on personal transport, so the bus is more of a fallback option. For short trips within the city, a walk is enough.
Driving features and parking
Kazakhstani-style driving licenses are recognized on the island, and a car can be rented. Traffic is left-hand, and this is the main difficulty for drivers from Almaty. The first kilometers are better driven on quiet streets. Parking in Ayia Napa and Limassol in summer is paid and full. In Paphos and Nicosia it is easier to find a place. Fines for parking violations are issued quickly, so signs should be read carefully.
| Resort | Road from Larnaca | Parking in summer | Buses |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ayia Napa | about an hour | paid, occupied | rare |
| Protaras | about an hour | easier to find | rare |
| Limassol | about forty minutes | paid, occupied | frequent |
| Paphos | about an hour and a half | freer | rare |

Accommodation and food: how to plan a budget
Expenses on the island depend on the season and the area. Beach holidays are cheaper if you book in advance and cook part of the food yourself.
Hotels, apartments and booking deadlines
Accommodation for the summer is booked several months in advance. In Ayia Napa and Protaras, hotels by the sea are snapped up first, and prices in high season are noticeably higher. Apartments with a kitchen cost less than a hotel. Groceries in supermarkets help reduce food expenses on a long trip. The Cyprus side also offers villas, but they are more expensive and often occupied. It is better to book with free cancellation so you can change plans without losses.
Cypriot cuisine, cafes and tips
Cypriot cuisine is meze, halloumi, olives, fresh fish. Portions are large, and the bill in tourist areas is higher than away from the promenade. In Limassol and Nicosia, eating is cheaper than in Ayia Napa. In restaurants and cafes, it is customary to leave tips, and they are often already included in the bill. Check the receipt before paying. Beach holidays with lunch at a local taverna turn out cheaper than at a hotel.
