Tours to Morocco: what to know

All inclusive holidays in Morocco mean the beaches of Agadir, mild winters on the coast and sightseeing tours to Marrakech and Casablanca. The most comfortable time to go is from May to October, when the ocean warms up to +20…+22 °C, and for trips around the cities it is better to choose spring or autumn. The flight from Almaty takes from 12–14 hours with one connection.

Visa, flight and the first questions of the trip — what do you need to know?

A trip to Morocco begins with two things: documents and the route. Let's break down what is known in advance and what is clarified before departure.

Visa-free entry for citizens of Kazakhstan: terms and passport requirements

For citizens of Kazakhstan, Morocco is open without a travel permit, but the document must be valid for the entire trip with a margin. All inclusive in the package does not cancel personal responsibility for documents. A passport with an expiring validity is the most common reason for refusal at the check-in desk. Check it six months before departure and renew it in advance if the margin is less. Keep copies of the pages separately from the original.

Routes from Almaty: which hubs to fly through and how long it takes

There is no direct connection between Almaty and Moroccan cities, so the route is built through major hubs. The most convenient way is to fly through Istanbul, Dubai or Doha. The minimum travel time with one connection is about 12–14 hours, with two transfers it is longer. All inclusive in the price of the package usually does not apply to the flight itself, unless the tour operator has stated otherwise. Tickets through Istanbul are often cheaper, through Doha — shorter in connection time. It is more convenient to arrive in Marrakech or Casablanca, and then get to Agadir by ground transport or a domestic flight. Consider a 2–3 hour connection comfortable, less — risky.

When to go: seasons and weather contrasts

Morocco is a country of contrasts: the coast, mountains and desert live by different weather laws. The choice of month determines what you will do.

Beach season on the Atlantic coast

The Atlantic warms up more slowly than the UAE or Egypt that Kazakhstanis are used to, and this is the main feature of local beach holidays. The comfortable season for swimming lasts from May to October, the water rises to +20…+22 °C. In Agadir, these months are warm and windy, which surfers like. All inclusive at a hotel on the coast works all year round, but in winter few dare to swim. In the evening by the ocean it is cool even in summer, a light jacket will come in handy. For families with children, the best months are July and August, when the water is warmest. In June and September there are fewer tourists and prices are softer.

Sightseeing windows of spring and autumn

For trips around the cities and the medina, spring and autumn are ideal, when the heat does not interfere with walking. From March to May and from September to November, daytime temperatures are +20…+28 °C, there are fewer tourists, and the daylight hours are long. All inclusive in the tour program usually does not cover entrance tickets to museums and gardens. In summer in Marrakech and inland areas, the temperature exceeds +40 °C, so sightseeing is moved to the morning or evening. In winter in the Atlas Mountains and in the desert, it is about 0 °C at night, warm clothes are needed all year round. Autumn in Casablanca is milder than inland due to the ocean air.

What is included in the package and what is paid separately?

A package with a meal plan is a convenient basis for a holiday, but it does not cover all expenses. Let's break down what is actually included and where to expect surcharges.

Alcohol and meals in hotels on the all inclusive system

In Moroccan hotels, all inclusive meals are more often limited to non-alcoholic drinks, and this is worth clarifying when booking. All inclusive in Morocco in practice means breakfast, lunch and dinner on schedule, local drinks and snacks during the day. Alcohol is either not included in the base package, or is served at certain hours and in a limited assortment. In Agadir and Marrakech, some hotels offer a paid bar by menu. Bottled water is almost always included, coffee and fresh juices — not everywhere. Dinner at the hotel on the system is a buffet, not à la carte. Check with the tour operator the list of drinks and bar hours before paying.

Desert tours and other surcharges on site

Trips to the Sahara are almost always paid separately, even if the holiday is arranged as all inclusive. Routes to Merzouga and Zagora take 2–3 days with an overnight stay in a Berber camp and transfer from Marrakech. All inclusive in the package does not cover the camel ride, quad bikes and dinner at the camp. Entrance tickets to gardens, museums and madrasas, as well as guide services in the medina, are paid separately. Renting a car will require an international driver's license, and parking in the medina is paid and cramped. Set aside cash in dirhams for surcharges: cards are not accepted everywhere.

Money, communication and everyday expenses

Everyday expenses in Morocco are made up of small things: currency exchange, communication, tips and purchases. It is easier to plan them in advance.

Dirham, currency exchange and card acceptance

The national currency is the Moroccan dirham, and it cannot be taken out of the country, so plan the exchange according to actual expenses. All inclusive at the hotel does not cancel expenses for tours, souvenirs and taxis. Exchange money in banks or official exchange offices, not on the street, where the rate and banknotes may turn out to be unreliable. Visa and Mastercard are accepted in hotels and large restaurants, but in the medina, at markets and in small cafes you need cash. ATMs are found, but not at every turn, especially away from tourist streets. Keep a small amount in small notes: large ones often have no change.

Tips, bargaining and cash in the medina

Tipping in Morocco is part of the service culture, not a display of generosity. In restaurants it is customary to leave 5–10% of the bill, and a small amount in dirhams for the porter and driver. All inclusive in the bill rarely covers these little things, so keep small change on hand. Haggling in markets and in the medina is the norm: the starting price is often inflated by 2–3 times. In Marrakech and Agadir people bargain more readily than in small towns. Walking away without naming your price is a working technique. Souvenirs worth bringing: argan oil, leather goods, ceramics, spices and carpets.

Health, safety and local customs

A calm holiday in Morocco rests on three things: insurance, respect for customs and basic caution.

Insurance, vaccinations and first aid kit

Medical insurance with sufficient coverage is a mandatory condition of the trip, the policy is checked at the border. All inclusive in the tour does not replace insurance, arrange it separately and take a printout. Vaccinations for Morocco are not required, but doctors advise a standard set: against hepatitis A, typhoid fever and tetanus. The risk of malaria is low, prophylaxis is usually not needed. Assemble the first aid kit in advance: painkillers, diarrhea remedies, antihistamine, sunscreen and repellent. Carry medicines with you in factory packaging. Buy drinking water in bottles, and wash fruit at the market yourself.

Codes of conduct: Ramadan, photos and alcohol

Local customs in Morocco are softer than in some neighboring countries, but respect for them is mandatory. During Ramadan many cafes and restaurants are closed during the day, and eating and smoking on the street in daylight is considered disrespectful to those fasting. All inclusive at the hotel during this period works on its usual schedule, but outside the tourist zone it is better to eat in designated places. Alcohol is sold in hotels and licensed stores, but drinking on the street is not customary. Photographing locals, especially women, without permission is not advisable. Dress modestly in the medina and near religious sites.
