Tours to Sri Lanka: what to know
New Year in Sri Lanka is celebrated on January 1 according to the European calendar, and this date drives winter prices and hotel schedules. The beach season runs in the southwest from November to April: Hikkaduwa, Bentota, Unawatuna, Negombo, Tangalle, Koggala and Kalutara welcome tourists. The east coast, including Trincomalee, is closed for swimming in winter. The price peak falls on December 25 — January 5.
Two holiday dates on the island
The festive winter in Sri Lanka rests on two calendars at once, and a tourist from Almaty needs to understand which of them drives prices and hotel schedules.
Western and Sinhalese-Tamil holidays
The main tourist New Year in Sri Lanka is celebrated on January 1 according to the European calendar. The second holiday, Sinhalese-Tamil, falls in mid-April and has nothing to do with a winter trip. Hotels in Hikkaduwa and Bentota build their December program around the western date. For locals, January 1 is a secular holiday, not a religious one. Buddhist temples operate on their usual schedule on this day, and respect for them remains mandatory. Sri Lankan cuisine does not change during the holidays: rice with curry, kottu and hoppers are served all year round. A tourist should remember the main thing — in winter the island lives by the European calendar.
What changes in the operation of hotels and cities in December
From mid-December, the resorts of Negombo, Unawatuna and Tangalle switch to festive mode. Shops, banks and government offices close on January 1, some cafes operate on a reduced schedule. In Colombo and Galle there is less business bustle during the holidays. Hotel staff are busy preparing dinners and show programs, so tourists should plan purchases and excursions in advance. The beach season in the southwest runs from November to April. The east coast, including Trincomalee, is closed for swimming in winter. Mid-December is the best moment to calmly explore the city before the influx of guests.
How to get there from Almaty
The journey from Almaty to the island takes more than half a day, and in high season connections are snapped up quickly.
Trip preparation for Kazakhstanis
Entry permission for citizens of Kazakhstan is issued online before departure, and check current conditions and deadlines on the official website of the Sri Lanka immigration service. It is better to keep a paper copy with you. Medical insurance covering active recreation is mandatory. The nearest major clinics are in Colombo and Galle. The April Sinhalese-Tamil holiday has nothing to do with December, so in winter people go to the island for the beaches, not for local celebrations. Gather documents in advance — at the end of December any delay is costly.
Routes with connections in high season
There are no direct flights from Almaty to the island. The flight is built through Dubai, Doha, Istanbul or Delhi. At the end of December connections are snapped up months in advance, and one connection is more convenient than two, but the choice in winter is narrow. The time difference with Almaty is half an hour all year round: Sri Lanka is on UTC+5:30, Kazakhstan on UTC+5. Allow at least three hours between flights: in December delays due to weather are possible. Plan your flight in advance, otherwise you will have to fly with two connections.
| Direction | Number of connections | Convenience in winter |
|---|---|---|
| Dubai | One | High |
| Doha | One | High |
| Istanbul | One | Medium |
| Delhi | Two | Low |

What to consider when booking accommodation
The festive night on the island is sold as a package, and this is the main thing that changes the approach to booking.
Festive packages and dinner on December 31
On New Year's Eve, hotels in Hikkaduwa and Unawatuna sell only packages. The price includes dinner and a show program, and you cannot opt out of them. Such rooms should be booked several months in advance. In Bentota and Tangalle the choice is wider than in Colombo, and small guesthouses do not make packages at all — there the holiday is more modest. Check when booking whether dinner is included, otherwise the surcharge on site will be a surprise. The package is beneficial for those who want to spend the night at the hotel rather than look for a table in the city.
| Resort | Type of celebration | Price level |
|---|---|---|
| Colombo | City dinners in hotels | High |
| Bentota | Family packages | Medium |
| Hikkaduwa | Beach parties | High |
| Tangalle | Quiet dinners | Medium |
| Trincomalee | Season closed in winter | Low |
Price difference before and after the holiday dates
The price peak on the island falls on December 25 — January 5. In early December the same hotels cost noticeably less, and the second half of January lowers prices again. Air tickets rise in price in sync with hotels. Kalutara and Koggala are cheaper than promoted resorts, and the Sri Lankan countryside is more affordable in winter than the capital. If your dates are flexible, shift your trip by a week — the savings will be noticeable. The price difference between the first and second half of January reaches a third, and this is worth considering when choosing dates.
How to get around and how to pay?
Logistics on the island are simple, but in winter they require a margin of time and cash.
Driver, trains and buses
Hiring a driver with a car is most convenient for several days. This way you will see Galle, Unawatuna and Tangalle without transfers. Trains along the coast are scenic, but tickets are snapped up in winter. Intercity buses are cheaper and run frequently; check schedules on site. From Colombo to Hikkaduwa the journey takes several hours, and during the holidays it gets longer. Between Negombo and Bentota it is also more convenient to travel with a driver. Choose the method by distance: short trips are easily done by bus, long ones are better left to a car.
Cash rupees, cards and exchange
The exchange rate of the rupee to the tenge is unstable. It is more profitable to exchange money at Colombo airport or in banks; hotels offer the worst rate. ATMs accept Visa and Mastercard and charge a commission for withdrawals. Cash will come in handy for tuk-tuks, markets and small cafes, while hotels and large restaurants accept cards. Keep small notes at hand: Sri Lankan trade loves cash payments. Keep part of the amount in rupees and part on a card, so you won't be left without money in the countryside.
What to put in your suitcase?
Packing for the island is simple, but a couple of things matter more than it seems.
Sun protection, repellents and a first aid kit
The sun on the island is active all year round. High-SPF cream is needed even on a cloudy day, and a hat and a light long-sleeved shirt save you on the beach. Mosquito repellent will come in handy in the evening. Put stomach remedies and painkillers in your first aid kit: Sri Lankan food is spicy, and the stomach does not react immediately. In the south and west in December there are strong waves, swim where lifeguards are on duty. Insurance must cover doctor visits. A packed first aid kit will save you from searching for medicines in an unfamiliar city.
SIM card and internet on the coast
It is convenient to buy a SIM card at Colombo airport. Mobile internet works in most resorts: in Hikkaduwa and Unawatuna the signal is stable, in Tangalle and Koggala it is weaker in places. Hotel networks are overloaded in winter. A local plan is enough for maps and messengers; roaming from Kazakhstan will cost more. Top up your balance in small shops: Sri Lankan operators sell packages for a week and a month. Take a package with extra data if you plan to work during your trip.

- The festive winter on the island revolves around January 1.
- The beach season runs in the southwest; the east is closed in winter.
- Hotels sell packages with dinner on the festive night.
- The peak of prices is from December 25 to January 5.
