Tours to Sri Lanka: what to know
In Sri Lanka, all inclusive most often means half board: breakfast and dinner, while lunch and drinks are paid for separately. A full package with lunch can realistically be found at resorts on the western and southern coasts — in Negombo, Bentota, Hikkaduwa, Tangalle, Koggala and Kalutara. In Colombo and the center of the island, this format is almost never found.
What does "all inclusive" mean in hotels on the island?
In Sri Lanka, all inclusive is understood differently than in Turkey or Egypt. Here the package is almost always more modest, and the details are decided by the specific hotel.
Full board or only breakfast and dinner
In Sri Lanka, all inclusive often hides half board. Sri Lankan hotels often call a rate with breakfast and dinner by this name. Lunch in this case is paid for separately, as are the drinks with it. In Colombo, city hotels operate on a bed and breakfast basis, and all inclusive is almost never found there. At the resorts of Bentota, Hikkaduwa, Negombo, Unawatuna, Tangalle, Koggala and Kalutara, packages with meals are offered noticeably more often. The choice is more modest in Galle and Trincomalee, where half board is more often taken. Read the rate description line by line: dinner from a menu instead of a buffet is a common local detail. Check at booking how many meals are actually included in the package.
Drinks and alcohol in the package: what is actually served
Alcohol in Sri Lanka is served according to local norms, and it is not always included in the package. Some hotels include only non-alcoholic drinks, while alcohol is counted separately. In others, all inclusive covers local beer and simple wine during limited hours. Strong imported alcohol is almost always for an additional fee. Bottled water is usually included, but its quantity is worth checking in advance. In some hotels, bottled water is included only at breakfast. Ask the operator for the exact list of drinks, not the general wording in the brochure.
When to book a package with full board?
Booking times in Sri Lanka depend on the coast and the month. The difference between early and late booking here is more noticeable than it seems.
High season and early booking
In high season, from December to March, hotels on the southwestern coast with full board are snapped up in advance. It is better to book such a package several months before departure from Almaty. During this period, in Hikkaduwa, Bentota and Unawatuna, free rooms with meals almost never remain. Prices in high season are higher, and the choice of rates is narrower. Early booking gives not only a place, but also clear conditions for meals. If the trip is planned for the New Year dates, the margin should be increased even more.
Low season: prices, weather and hotel availability
From May to November, the rainy season runs in the southwest of Sri Lanka, and prices for packages fall. There are more hotels with meals during this period, and there are enough free places even with late booking. In the east of the island, in the Trincomalee area, all inclusive is available precisely in these months. The weather in low season is changeable: short downpours give way to sun. This option suits those who are ready for humidity in order to save money. Check with the operator how the hotel operates in the off-season: some kitchens cut the menu.
Where to look for hotels with full board
The geography of packages on the island is uneven. The coast determines both the choice and the meal format itself.
Western and southern coast: wide choice
| Resort | Meal format | Season |
|---|---|---|
| Negombo | All inclusive and half board | December–March |
| Bentota | All inclusive in large hotels | December–March |
| Hikkaduwa | All inclusive and bed and breakfast | December–March |
| Unawatuna | Half board more often | December–March |
| Tangalle | All inclusive at large hotels | December–March |
| Koggala | All inclusive and half board | December–March |
| Kalutara | Half board and all inclusive | December–March |
On the western and southern coast of Sri Lanka, the choice of packages with meals is the widest. Large resort hotels stand here, which maintain a buffet and operate on an all inclusive basis. In Colombo there is almost no such format, the capital lives on a bed and breakfast basis. Kalutara and Bentota are convenient due to their proximity to the airport. Hikkaduwa and Unawatuna add beach and surfing to meals. Tangalle and Koggala are chosen by those who want silence. In Galle the choice is more modest: there half board is more often taken and dinner is eaten in the city.
East and central part: half board and modest choice
In the center of the island and in the east, all inclusive is rare. In Trincomalee, hotels more often offer half board, and lunch is ordered separately. In the Kandy area and the tea plantations, there are almost no packages with full board. The reason is simple: guests come there for sightseeing tours, not to lie by the pool. Sri Lankan cuisine in such hotels is home-style, but the choice of dishes is narrower. If meals are important, take the eastern or southern coast. Leave the center of the island for short trips of a couple of nights.
What to check with the tour operator before payment
Some questions are resolved before the tour is confirmed. Later they will have to be resolved on the spot and at your own expense.
Transfer from the airport and a night in a transit hotel
From Almaty to Sri Lanka, people usually fly with a connection, so the package may include a night in a transit hotel. Check whether the transfer from Colombo airport to the resort and back is included. The road to the southern resorts takes several hours, and it is better to order the transfer in advance. Sometimes only a group transfer on a schedule is included in the package. Then you will have to pay extra for an individual car. That way you will understand what has already been paid for and what has not.
Insurance, documents and passport validity
Insurance for Sri Lanka is arranged separately; it is not included in the standard package. It is worth selecting a medical policy for your activities: surfing and diving require extensions. Entry conditions change, so check them on the website of the official authority before the trip. The same check should be repeated a couple of weeks before departure. Separately check with the operator whether it helps with obtaining an entry permit. These details are better settled in advance, and not at Almaty airport.
How to eat and what to keep in mind on the spot
Meals in the package solve half of the everyday issues. The other half is water, tips, and trips outside the hotel.
Sri Lankan cuisine: spiciness and adapted dishes
Sri Lankan cuisine is spicy, and that is the first thing to prepare for. The basis of the table is rice and curry, coconut roti, sambol made from coconut and chili. In all inclusive hotels, adapted dishes are usually offered, less pungent than in street cafes. Ask the waiter to mark spicy sauces separately so you can adjust the taste yourself. Fresh fruits and tropical juices are almost always included in the package. If your stomach is sensitive, start with simple dishes and add spices gradually. After a couple of days, the taste adapts, and local food stops seeming extreme.
Water, tips, and excursions outside the package
You cannot drink tap water in Sri Lanka. Bottled water is usually included in the package, but its amount should be clarified. Tips are not included in the price and remain at the guest's discretion. Excursions to Sigiriya, Kandy, and the tea plantations are also not included in the package. They are booked separately, and the price depends on the number of people and the distance. Dinner outside the hotel, a trip to Galle or to the market are also paid for by yourself. Plan a separate budget for such outings in advance.
