Tours to Sri Lanka: what to know

Beach holidays in Sri Lanka are possible all year round, but the coast is chosen by season: the west and south are dry from December to April, the east coast from May to September. There are no direct flights from Almaty; the journey to Colombo with a connection takes 10–14 hours. The time difference with Almaty is minus 30 minutes, so acclimatization is barely noticeable. Next, we will look at resorts, transport, food and budget.

Visa, flight and money: what should a tourist from Almaty consider?

A holiday on the island begins long before leaving the plane. Let's look at what a resident of Almaty needs to know about the journey, money and the first days in Sri Lanka.

Entry documents and electronic authorization

A citizen of Kazakhstan for a tourist trip to the island must obtain an electronic authorization online before departure. Without it, you may not be allowed to board the plane at the check-in desk in Almaty. The return ticket is often checked there too, so keep a printout at hand. The validity period of the main document is compared with the date of entry. Check current requirements and the application form on the official website of the Sri Lanka immigration service: https://www.immigration.gov.lk, checked on 04.09.2026. Apply in advance so as not to resolve the issue at the airport.

Flight with a connection and time difference

There are no direct flights from Almaty to the island. Beach holidays here usually begin with a transfer through Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Doha or Istanbul. The journey to Colombo takes approximately 10–14 hours together with the connection. The time difference with Almaty is minus 30 minutes, so acclimatization is barely noticeable. Take water and light food in your hand luggage. A 2–3 hour connection is more convenient than a long one: you have time for the transfer, but do not get tired in the waiting hall.

Currency, cards and ATMs on the coast

The main currency is the Sri Lankan rupee. Cash dollars or euros are exchanged at the airport and banks, but the rate in the city is usually better. Cards are accepted in hotels and large restaurants, while cash is needed in markets, tuk-tuks and small cafes. ATMs are available in Negombo, Colombo, Hikkaduwa and Galle, but in small villages there may be none. Withdraw money in advance, before traveling deeper along the coast. Keep a small amount in small notes — it is more convenient to pay that way.

When to go to the beaches: seasons of the two coasts?

Beach holidays on the island are possible all year round. Everything is decided by the coast: while one is getting wet in the rain, the other is receiving tourists.

Dry season on the west and south coast

The best time for the west and south coast is from December to April. In these months, the beaches of Negombo, Bentota, Hikkaduwa, Unawatuna, Tangalle, Koggala and Kalutara have dry sunny weather. Rain is rare and short, the sea is calmer, and visibility for snorkeling is higher. The south at this time is the busiest section of the coast, and accommodation prices are higher. The middle of the season falls in January and February. If you want it quieter, choose early December or late March.

Weather on the east coast and the shoulder season

The east coast lives to a different rhythm: its season is from May to September. Beach holidays in Trincomalee in these months please with dry weather and a calm sea. The west and south at this time get more rain, but short. The shoulder season is April and October–November: the weather is changeable, but prices are lower and there are fewer tourists. A holiday on the island in such months is planned according to the forecast, not the calendar. Check the summary a couple of days ahead and choose the coast accordingly.

How to get to the resorts from the airport

The airport is located next to Negombo, and this is a convenient starting point. Further, the coast stretches south and east.

Transfer from Negombo and Colombo

From the airport to Negombo it takes about 20 minutes, to Colombo about an hour. Beach holidays in Negombo are convenient to start immediately after arrival: close, inexpensive and without a long journey. Shuttles and taxis go to Colombo, but in rush hour the journey drags on. Book a transfer in advance or take a car at the desk in the arrivals hall. From Colombo, an expressway goes further south; along it, Hikkaduwa is about two hours away. Transfer prices depend on the distance and the class of the car.

Trains and buses along the ocean

Trains between Colombo and Galle run along the ocean. Many people begin a holiday on the island with this very journey: cheap and very scenic. It is better to buy tickets in advance; second-class seats sell out quickly. Buses run more often and cost less, but travel more slowly and without air conditioning. Local trains and scheduled buses are convenient between the resorts of the south. Check the schedule on the spot; it changes.

Tuk-tuks and scooter rental on site

The tuk-tuk is the main transport for short distances. Beach holidays in Unawatuna or Hikkaduwa are inconvenient without it: it takes a couple of minutes to get to the beach, cafes and shops. Agree on the price before the trip, otherwise you risk overpaying. Scooter rental is popular, but an international driving permit and caution on the road are needed. Traffic here is left-hand, and the roads are narrow. A helmet is mandatory, and without experience it is better to take a tuk-tuk with a driver.

What to try and how not to spoil your holiday

Food and small precautions decide how the coast will be remembered. Let's look at the main things.

Sri Lankan cuisine: rice and curry, kottu, hoppers

Sri Lankan cuisine is spicy, and this is its main feature. Rice and curry are the basis of lunch, kottu is made from chopped flatbread with vegetables and meat, hoppers are thin cups made of rice batter. Beach holidays in Tangalle or Koggala are not complete without fresh seafood. In tourist places they cook less spicy, but ask in advance. Try street food at crowded spots where products turn over quickly. Portions are large; one plate is often enough for two.

Water, ice and prevention of intestinal disorders

You cannot drink tap water. Beach holidays on the island require a simple rule: only bottled water, including for brushing your teeth. It is also better not to take ice from street vendors. Wash fruit with bottled water and peel it yourself. Bring stomach upset remedies and sorbents with you. If symptoms last more than two days, see a doctor.

Sun, mosquitoes and insurance for water activities

The sun here is equatorial, high SPF cream and a hat are needed even on cloudy days. Beach holidays in Kalutara or Bentota can easily be ruined by a sunburn on the very first day. Mosquito protection is important in the evening, especially near water bodies and in the jungle. The current on some beaches is strong, swim where there are lifeguards. Insurance covering water activities will come in handy. Read the terms in advance so you do not have to argue with the insurance company later.

Trip budget and everyday little things

Expenses on the coast depend on the resort and the style of vacation. Below are guidelines that will help you plan your trip.

How much a day on the coast costs

A day on the coast costs differently depending on the resort and season. Beach holidays in Negombo are cheaper than in Hikkaduwa or Unawatuna. A guesthouse, food in local cafes and a tuk-tuk cost noticeably less than a hotel with a pool. Meals in tourist restaurants are several times more expensive than street food. Excursions and water activities add to the daily budget. Exact amounts change, so calculate with a margin.

Tips, bargaining and rules of behavior

Tips are not mandatory, but it is customary to leave 10% in restaurants and a small amount for hotel staff. Beach holidays in Galle or Trincomalee involve bargaining in markets and tuk-tuks. Bargain calmly and with a smile, rudeness is not liked here. In temples, covered shoulders and knees are required, shoes are taken off at the entrance. It is not worth photographing people without permission. Respect for local customs noticeably simplifies the trip.

Clothing for the beach and temples

For clothing, light items made of natural fabrics are enough. Vacation here means swimsuits, T-shirts, shorts and sandals. For temples, take clothing that covers your shoulders and knees — a pareo or a light long-sleeved shirt. It is convenient for women to have a scarf with them. In the evening, mosquito repellent and a light jacket will come in handy. Choose shoes that are easy to take off.

Briefly

  • The beach season on the island is divided between two coasts: the west and south — winter, the east — summer.
  • From Almaty, flights go with a connection, the journey takes from ten hours.
  • Cash rupees help out in markets, tuk-tuks and small cafes.
  • Sri Lankan cuisine is spicy, and only bottled water is suitable.
