Tours to Montenegro: what to know

Beach holidays in Montenegro are 100 kilometres of pebble and sandy shores of the Adriatic, where the swimming season lasts from mid-June to early October. The most comfortable time to go is September: the sea stays warm, the heat subsides, and accommodation prices drop. There are no direct flights from Almaty — travellers fly via Istanbul, Dubai or Belgrade with layovers from four to twelve hours.

Seasons and weather: when is the best time to go to the sea?

A holiday on the coast here depends on the month more than it seems from the map. The Adriatic warms up unevenly, and the same resort feels different in June and September.

Velvet season and its advantages

September and the first half of October are the best time for those who want a warm sea without the crowds. The water retains the heat accumulated over the summer, and the air becomes milder. The heat subsides, and walking along the Budva promenade or the old town of Kotor is already comfortable. Accommodation prices in Montenegro during these weeks are noticeably lower than at peak. The beaches empty out, and sunbeds are easier to find. For families with small children, such a holiday is convenient: there is no midday scorching heat, and the risk of overheating is lower. It is still worth booking apartments in advance, because some tourists have already appreciated this period. Such a seaside holiday in the velvet season is also suitable for those who combine it with sightseeing. The evenings are cool, so it is worth taking a light jacket.

May and early June: cool water and sightseeing

In May and the first days of June, the sea has not yet warmed up for long swimming. The water is invigorating, adults go in briefly, and children usually come out quickly. But this is the time for walks and trips. Montenegrin nature is especially fresh during these weeks. Lake Skadar, the canyons and the old towns look beautiful without the summer haze. A seaside holiday during this period is chosen by those for whom swimming is not the main thing. Hotels and apartments are cheaper, and the promenades are quiet. Ulcinj and Bar already receive the first swimmers in May, but the water remains cool. Take warm clothes for the evening. Rain still occurs, although less often than in winter.

Winter coast without swimming

From December to February, the Montenegrin coast is almost deserted. Many hotels and cafes are closed, and the promenades of Budva and Petrovac look empty. No one goes there to swim at this time. But prices are minimal, and the air is milder than in Almaty in winter. Such a holiday in Montenegro in winter is not about the sea, but about walks and a change of scenery. Some hotels in Kotor and Tivat operate, but the choice is limited. It is worth checking in advance what is open in the city you need. For a quiet holiday without swimming, the format is suitable; for a classic beach holiday, it is not.

Resorts and their features: which ones to choose?

The Montenegrin coast is not uniform. One resort is noisy and crowded, another is quiet and intimate. The choice depends on what you expect from the trip.

Budva and Becici: lively beaches

Budva is the country's most famous resort, and beach holidays here are the most active. The promenade stretches along the sea, with bars, restaurants and shops nearby. The beaches are pebbly, the water is clean, and the entry into the sea is quite steep. Becici is located nearby and is considered a family option. The beach here is long, with fine pebbles and a gentler entry. In summer, Budva and Becici are crowded, and music plays until night. Accommodation becomes one and a half to two times more expensive in July and August. It is better to book apartments two to three months in advance. For young people and those who like activity, this is a good choice. Families with strollers should take into account the noise and crowds on the promenade.

Petrovac and Sveti Stefan: cosy bays

Petrovac and Sveti Stefan are an option for those who value calm. Petrovac stands in a wide bay, the beach is long, and olive trees grow along it. Sveti Stefan is known for its islet hotel on the cliff, with equipped beaches nearby. A seaside holiday in Montenegro here is measured, without night-time bustle. The water is transparent, and the entry into the sea is more often pebbly. There is infrastructure, but life quietens down early in the evening. Prices are slightly lower than in Budva, especially in June and September. You can get to Budva by bus in a short time. For couples and families, this is a convenient base.

Kotor and Tivat: proximity to the airport

Kotor and Tivat are convenient for those who do not want to travel long after the flight. Tivat airport is nearby, and Kotor is not far either. Beach holidays in these towns have a special feature: the beaches are narrow and often concrete. But nearby are the old town of Kotor and the Bay of Kotor with beautiful views. It is better to go to neighbouring bays for swimming. Tivat is quieter than Kotor, but the infrastructure is well developed. Accommodation here is more expensive than in Petrovac because of the location. For a short trip of a few days, this is a practical choice.

Herceg Novi, Bar and Ulcinj: quiet options

Herceg Novi, Bar and Ulcinj are the southern and western coast, where there are fewer tourists. Herceg Novi is immersed in greenery, the beaches are pebbly, and the water is clean. Bar is a large city with a port, and beach holidays here are simpler and cheaper. Ulcinj is the southernmost resort, known for its long sandy beach. This is a rarity for Montenegro, where almost everywhere there are pebbles. Velika Plaza in Ulcinj stretches for kilometres, and the entry into the water is gentle. For families with children, this is one of the best places. Prices in these towns are lower than in Budva, and accommodation is easier to find. The downside is the distance from Tivat airport.

How to get there from Almaty and what about the visa

The journey from Almaty to the Montenegrin coast takes almost a day. There are no direct flights, so the route is built through major hubs.

Visa-free entry for Kazakhstanis

Entry rules should be checked before buying tickets, because they change. When transiting through third countries, their visa may be required, and this depends on the chosen route. A connection in Istanbul, Dubai or Belgrade should be checked in advance. The airline usually provides information about requirements on its website. If you are planning a long trip, check the permitted length of stay. Without this knowledge, it is easy to buy tickets for an inconvenient route.

Routes with connections and travel time

There are no direct flights from Almaty to Tivat or Podgorica. Usually people fly via Istanbul, Dubai or Belgrade. A connection adds from four to twelve hours to the journey beyond the flight. Via Istanbul the route is shorter, but the connection may be at night. Belgrade is convenient because from there you can reach the coast by ground transport. Dubai offers comfortable connections, but lengthens the journey. A beach holidays begins only after this journey, so choose your route calmly. It is better to arrive in Tivat if the resort is on the Budva Riviera. For Ulcinj and Bar, Podgorica is more convenient.

Accommodation, money and transport on site

On site, a tourist faces three everyday questions: where to live, how to pay and how to get around. Half of the impression from the trip depends on them.

Apartments or hotel: what to choose

Apartments and rooms in the private sector are a popular format on the Montenegrin coast. The price depends on the distance from the sea and the availability of air conditioning. A hotel provides service, cleaning and breakfast, but costs more. Such holidays with children are often based on apartments: there is a kitchen, you can cook. In Budva and Becici the choice of accommodation is wider, in Ulcinj it is narrower. Budget options should be booked two to three months before the trip. Check at check-in whether the tourist tax is included in the price. Often it is paid separately, and the amount depends on the category of the property. Air conditioning in July and August is essential; without it, it is hard to sleep.

Cash, cards and tourist tax

The national currency of Montenegro is the euro, although the country is not part of the eurozone. It is unprofitable to exchange tenge and rubles; the rate is usually bad. It is better to bring euros in cash or withdraw from ATMs. Cards from Kazakhstani banks are not accepted everywhere. In small cafes, at markets and in apartments, cash is often needed. Keep part of the amount with you, especially in southern cities. The commission of your bank for withdrawal should be checked before departure. The tourist tax is paid separately from the booking; the amount is stated at check-in. Tips in cafes are not included in the bill and usually amount to about ten percent.

Buses and car rental along the coast

Buses run between the resorts, but the schedule is not always convenient. From Budva to Petrovac or Kotor you can get there, but you will have to wait. Car rental gives freedom if you have an international driving permit. The roads in Montenegro are mountainous and narrow. The serpentine roads on the way to the coast require caution, especially if you are driving for the first time. Parking near the beaches in summer is paid and full. For short trips between Budva and Becici, a car is not needed. For Ulcinj and Herceg Novi, it saves time.

What to consider with children and in everyday life

A family trip to the sea requires different preparation than a solo one. Little things like entering the water or communication decide more than it seems.

Entering the water and choosing a beach for a child

Gentle beaches with small pebbles are not found everywhere on the coast. In Budva and Kotor, the entry into the sea is abrupt, the stones are slippery. In Ulcinj and Becici, the entry is gentler, which is convenient for children. Special water shoes will be useful on any pebble beach. Check the nature of the entry in advance when choosing accommodation. A beach holidays with a child is better planned for the morning and evening. At noon the sun is too active. There is shade on the beaches, but sun loungers and umbrellas are often paid. Take hats and water with you.

Communication, insurance and language barrier

Local SIM cards are sold by passport; tourist tariffs with internet are convenient. Internet is needed for navigation and communication with home. An insurance policy for traveling abroad should be arranged in advance. Treatment without insurance is paid and expensive. The language barrier in tourist areas is minimal: Russian is understood. In remote areas, basic English or a few words in Montenegrin will be useful. Tap drinking water in coastal cities is usually suitable. Many tourists still buy bottled water, especially in the heat. Montenegrin cuisine is based on fish, grilled meat, cheeses and vegetables. Portions are large; lunch at a konoba is cheaper than a restaurant on the promenade.
