Tours to Uzbekistan: what to know
The best time for tours to Uzbekistan from Aktau is April, May, September and October: in Samarkand and Bukhara it is about twenty degrees during the day, without exhausting heat. The flight from Aktau takes several hours, most often with a stop in Tashkent. Allow from seven to ten days to see Tashkent, Samarkand, Bukhara and Khiva. It is more convenient to plan a holiday in Uzbekistan one or two months before departure.
What do Kazakhstanis need to know about the visa, documents and entry rules?
Before the trip it is worth calmly sorting out the formalities. Below is what concerns specifically tours to Uzbekistan and preparation for them.
What you need to know before booking a tour
It is more convenient to book tours to Uzbekistan from Aktau in advance, one or two months before departure. The tour operator requests the tourist's identity document details and confirms the hotel booking with them. For the trip, citizens of Kazakhstan usually need a valid document of the established format, issued in advance. A holiday in Uzbekistan is arranged so that the main troubles fall precisely on the preparation stage. Before payment it is worth checking the dates, hotel category and route cities — Tashkent, Samarkand, Bukhara and Khiva come in different combinations. If you are travelling as a family, clarify in advance the accommodation of children in the rooms.
| Parameter | What to do |
|---|---|
| Booking deadline | One or two months before departure |
| Tourist details | Identity document |
| Documents for the trip | Valid document of the established format |
| Requirements for documents and deadlines | Clarified with the operator |
| What to check before payment | Dates, hotel category, route cities |
| Route cities | Tashkent, Samarkand, Bukhara, Khiva |
| Family trip | Clarify the accommodation of children in the rooms |
Registration at the place of stay and passport validity periods
When staying at a hotel, Uzbekistan issues a mark of the place of stay automatically, the guest does not need to do anything. If the tours involve overnight stays in private accommodation, the mark is made by the owner of the house, and these papers should be kept until departure. The validity period of the identity document is checked before departure from Aktau: it must remain valid for the entire period of the holiday in Uzbekistan with a margin. There is no time difference with Almaty: Uzbekistan, like Kazakhstan, is on UTC+5 all year round. Keep copies of the document separately from the original: in Samarkand and Bukhara they are sometimes asked for at the hotel reception.
When is the best time to go and how many days to allow?
The season in Uzbekistan is pronounced, and how comfortable the holiday will be depends on the month. Let us look at the weather by season and hotel occupancy.
Weather by season: spring, summer, autumn
The most successful time for tours to Uzbekistan is April, May, September and October. In spring in Samarkand and Bukhara it is about twenty degrees during the day, but in desert areas there are rains and wind. In summer in Bukhara and Khiva the air often goes over forty degrees, and the sightseeing of fortresses is moved to the morning and evening. In autumn, even warm weather sets in in Uzbekistan, convenient for long walks around the old city. In winter in Tashkent it is cool and damp, but there are few tourists and hotels are cheaper. For a trip with children, choose autumn: the temperature changes are milder.
High season and hotel occupancy in Samarkand and Bukhara
In high season, hotels in Samarkand and Bukhara are booked up a month or more in advance, especially at weekends. The peak falls on April–May and September–October, when Uzbekistan has the most pleasant weather. In Khiva the choice of hotels is more modest, so there it is worth booking even earlier. Tours with fixed dates are more profitable to take in advance: closer to departure from Aktau mainly expensive categories remain. If the dates are flexible, shift the holiday to the first half of June or the end of August.
| Season | Weather | Hotel occupancy |
|---|---|---|
| Spring | Warm, occasional rains | High |
| Summer | Hot, above 40 | Medium |
| Autumn | Dry and warm | High |
| Winter | Cool, damp | Low |
How to get to the cities and move around within the country
Convenient connections are established between the main cities of Uzbekistan. Let us tell you about the trains and how to get to Khiva.
High-speed trains between Tashkent, Samarkand and Bukhara
Afrosiyob high-speed trains connect Tashkent, Samarkand and Bukhara and noticeably save travel time. From the capital to Samarkand the journey takes about two hours, to Bukhara — around four. Tickets for these routes sell out quickly in high season, so they are taken together with the booking of tours. The carriages are comfortable, with air conditioning and luggage spaces, which is important after a hot day in Uzbekistan. From Aktau, tourists usually fly to Tashkent and from there build a route around the country. The schedule changes by season, so check the exact time when buying.
The road to Khiva and taxis within the cities
It is most convenient to get to Khiva from Bukhara by train or car, the journey takes several hours. Khiva stands aside from the high-speed line, so part of the route is sometimes covered by a regular train or transfer. Within the cities, taxi-hailing apps and private drivers are common. It is better to agree on the price of the trip in advance, especially at railway stations and in the bazaars of Uzbekistan. In Samarkand and Bukhara many attractions stand close to each other, and part of the route is more pleasant to walk. In the evening, for long trips, call a car through the app.
Money, communication and language on the spot
Financial and everyday little things decide how calm the holiday will be. Here is what is worth knowing about money and communication.
Cash sums, currency exchange and card payment
The main currency of Uzbekistan is the sum, and cash will definitely be needed during the trip. Take dollars or euros in undamaged banknotes: crumpled and torn bills are exchanged reluctantly. Money can be exchanged at banks and exchange offices, the rate is approximately the same everywhere. Cards of international systems are not accepted everywhere, so at bazaars and in the provinces a supply of cash is essential. In large hotels in Tashkent and Samarkand, card payment usually goes through, but in small guesthouses in Bukhara and Khiva — not always. Small bills will come in handy for taxis and tips.
Russian and Uzbek: where each is useful
Russian is widely spoken in the cities of Uzbekistan, and in Tashkent, Samarkand, Bukhara it is easy to communicate in it. In hotels, cafes and with guides, communication problems practically do not arise. Uzbek will be useful in villages, at markets and in remote areas, where Russian speech is understood less well. A few simple words like greetings and thanks win over locals and help in bargaining. English in Uzbekistan is known mainly by young people and tourism sector employees. If you are going to remote areas, keep a translator on your phone at hand.
What to consider on the trip: food, water, clothing and safety
Everyday habits in Uzbekistan differ from Kazakhstani ones, and it is better to prepare for this. Below — about water, cuisine, clothing and behavior in crowded places.
Drinking regime and features of local cuisine
Drinking tap water in Uzbekistan is not recommended, it is safer to buy bottled. In the heat in Bukhara and Khiva you need to drink noticeably more than usual, otherwise by evening weakness sets in. Local cuisine is hearty: pilaf, samsa, lagman, shurpa, manti. In Samarkand it is worth trying Samarkand pilaf and flatbreads, in Bukhara — local sweets. Portions are large, so in the first days do not pounce on everything at once. Vegetables and fruits at markets in Uzbekistan are fresh, but they still need to be washed.
Dress code at mosques, photography and bargaining at bazaars
When visiting active mosques and mausoleums, women are advised to have a headscarf and closed clothing. In Uzbekistan tourists are treated kindly, but respect for religious sites is valued. Photographing people, especially in religious places and at markets, should be done with permission. At bazaars it is customary to bargain, especially when buying souvenirs, ceramics, fabrics and spices. A discount in Samarkand or Bukhara is realistic to get if you stay polite and do not rush. Medical insurance with coverage on the territory of Uzbekistan is a reasonable precaution, especially when traveling to desert areas.
